600 mL bottle from the LCBO, included in their 2016 Best of Beau's mixed pack; bottled Oct 27 2016. I've had plenty of coffee-infused beers, but a pilsener?! That's new to me, which means I want to try it. Served slightly chilled.
Pours a pale golden-blonde hue; mostly transparent, but with a thin, sediment-borne haze dispersed amidst a series of lively streams of effervescence. The two fingers of pillowy white foam that are created prove to be quite resilient - even by the ten minute mark, the head is still an inch high, lumpier and creamier-looking than ever. I don't see how anyone other than a teetotaller could look at this glass of beer and not want to take a sip. The aroma, on the other hand, will likely prove to be more divisive. It's muted, but otherwise akin to many Euro lagers - with grainy coarse malts and crackery sweetness, as well as some grassy, floral hops and a weak suggestion of indistinct citrus. It's unfortunate that the faint, burnt coffee grounds notes don't do the nose any favours, releasing an almost ashtray-like vibe that I don't especially love.
A weird one, to say the least. The grainy pale pilsener malts shine through initially, imparting a mild crackery sweetness that takes on more of a caramel or honey-like tone further into the sip. The hops come off mostly earthy and floral, with suggestions of muddled citrus. Slight metallicity on the back end, which reminds me of cold, black coffee that has been sitting out for a few hours. The coffee bean flavour starts off slow but gains momentum towards the finish, becoming the most prominent aspect prior to a dry aftertaste. On the lighter side of medium-bodied, with decidedly low carbonation for a pale lager - it does have a meek sort of bite to it, but I definitely wouldn't describe it as "crisp", or particularly refreshing.
Final Grade: 3.39, a forgettable B-. Collabrrrewnaut is novel, I'll give it that, but the coffee and pilsener flavours are too disparate to come together as a cohesive unit. I've tried to like this beer, but ultimately I just don't, really... and honestly, I can see why most BAs seem to lean that way. Because whether you're looking for a coffee beer, a quality pilsener, or just something new to try that is both unique and good - this oddity doesn't really hit any of those targets. It's different, I guess, but that doesn't make it worth buying again.

This beer pours a clear, bright medium golden yellow colour, with four fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly off-white head, which leaves a bit of electrical discharge lace around the glass as it slowly seeps away.
It smells of acrid artisanal coffee, some free-range ashiness, gritty and grainy pale malt, ephemeral citrusy notes, a bit of earthy yeastiness, and some plain leafy, herbal, and dead grassy green hop bitters. The taste is semi-sweet pale cereal malt, sort of milky and edgy roasted coffee, muddled domestic citrus flesh, a further pome fruitiness, and more musty, earthy, and grassy hoppiness.
The carbonation is adequate in its structurally supportive frothiness, the body a decent middleweight, and fairy smooth, with a wee air creaminess evolving as things warm up a tad. It finishes off-dry, the base cereal flavours balancing the lingering coffee bitterness.
Overall, this seems like a silly thing to do, brewing-wise, and it is, but you can look at it two ways: first, ya luv yer java, so who cares about the pilsner flavour underneath? And second, screw this, I can't really make out the finer pilsner essences, too much bloody coffee in the way. Me, I fall somewhere in the middle.

Taste: Unique but quite dreadful. Tastes like how I imagine a cold cup of coffee poured into a pilsener would taste. I could not finish the beer and had to give it to my wife (who actually liked it).
Feel: Flat mouthfeel with awful lingering aftertaste of burnt coffee grinds and watery pilsener.
I had high expectations for this collaboration between two Ottawa area institutions: Bridgehead coffee and Beau's Brewery, unfortunately the resulting product is an abomination. This is a truly unique beer in the worst possible way.

Taste: Unique but quite dreadful. Tastes like how I imagine a cold cup of coffee poured into a pilsener would taste. I could not finish the beer and had to give it to my wife (who actually liked it).
Feel: Flat mouthfeel with awful lingering aftertaste of burnt coffee grinds and watery pilsener.
I had high expectations for this collaboration between two Ottawa area institutions: Bridgehead coffee and Beau's Brewery, unfortunately the resulting product is an abomination. This is a truly unique beer in the worst possible way.

600 ml bottle served cold into a pint glass. Bottle October 27, 2016. batch 5642. Certainly appears that this has been brought back for the holiday season. Labeled as an espresso pilsner on the bottle.
Appearance - A bright golden color, rich with highlights and a permanence of haze. A decent finger and a half of white is poured and traces linger for the duration of the bottle. No lacing to speak of.
Smell - Grassy notes, with a stale earthy hop aroma. Flecks of citrus in there with possibly some form of pear. Interesting blend.
Taste - Plenty of bitterness, with some subtle orchard fruit sweetness. Pear again. Then finishes with a musty and dank earthy hop flavor. I suppose the coffee in this accounts for it, but the melding of these flavors don't really work. Reminds me a lot of their Altbier which I wasn't a big fan of either.
Mouthfeel - Smooth, decent body, carbonation is light to middling. No complaints here.
Overall - Not a fan of the coffee addition in this collaboration as to me it tastes stale and musty. Certain to have some appeal for others but the weakest beer of the Christmas pack in my opinion.
