600 mL bottle from the LCBO; one of four beers included in their Winter 2019 mixed pack. Dated Oct 31 2018 and served slightly chilled.

This brew is cloudy amber-orange in colour, with a rough pour producing one finger of frothy, soapy white foam that fizzles off in about two minutes' time. A nondescript collar sticks around, circling a wispy film upon the surface. They used hefeweizen yeast to brew this, which probably explains the banana/bubble gum vibe I noticed right from the first sniff. It's a wholesome aroma, with wheat grain sweetness and subtle rye bread spiciness, as well as an undercurrent of juniper, cedar and floral hops. I like it; sort of like a spicy weiss.

Even after a few sips, I'm not too sure about this one - it reminds me of a Belgian pale ale more than anything else. Its strongest feature is its robustly grainy forefront, which combines bready wheat and barley together with subtle rye spiciness, as well as a light honeyed sweetness. The juniper starts to come through later on, joined by yeasty hints of ripe banana and an earthy, woodsy/bark note towards a slightly boozy-sweet finish. Earthy aftertaste that lingers for a bit. Medium-full in body, with low-ish carbonation levels that softly tickle the surface of the palate; feels quite soft and smooth in the mouth. Reasonably drinkable for its abv, but if seconds were an option, I think I'd pass.

Final Grade: 3.68, a B grade. I review a lot of beer, but there are still several styles where I consider myself to be an abject newbie - and this is one of them. I mean, I've only had one real (genuine Finnish) sahti, and that was more than a thousand reviews ago. Jänis seems like a fairly loose interpretation of the style: sort of like a Belgian pale, but crossed with a hefe, crossed with a rye beer, with some juniper added. I'm not convinced that it's the best Beau's can do in this category.

600 ml bottle served cold into a pint glass. Purchased as part of Winter Pack 2018, so either $5.50 or $6 CDN depending on how how allocate price to Lug Tread. review from notes

Appearance - Mostly clear, dark amber color with two fingers of dense white head. Modest retention and minimal lacing. Plenty of visible carbonation.

Smell - Some general graininess, with earthy juniper undertones and minerally aromas as well. Minimal fruitiness.

Taste - Lots of grain initially, some earthiness and hints of juniper and low hanging berries. The wheat comes through at the end. Very little sweetness, but not much bitterness either. Alcohol is well hidden.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied brew with medium carbonation. Slightly dry finish.

Overall - I really wanted to like Janis, but it just didn't turn out the way other well made Sahti's have for me. Worth a try and a good addition to the winter pack, but didn't do it for me. YMMV.
