A very subdued quaff. Peach Amber looking under a moderate head, no lace. A somewhat earthy nose, that carries over to the taste. Dry, slightly metallic, watery in character. Smoke? None of that really. A bit of fruitiness. But mostly meh.

600 mL bottle from the LCBO; dated Oct 11 2018 and served slightly chilled. A 6.7% gose? Seems a little high, but who am I to judge?

Pours a foggy medium gold, with half a finger of loose, soapy white foam rising to the top before falling apart within 90 seconds or so. A thin collar sticks around, as do a few scant swaths of lace; the surface is otherwise barren, save for a few patches of bubbly film. The nose is very subtle considering the beer's ingredients - there's faint suggestions of brine, woody bark and berries, as well as some earthy, patchouli-like notes, all of which are overlain by notes of wheaty bread and yeasty spice. Hints of smoke and acidity open up slightly as the glass warms (emphasis on 'slightly').

Interesting. There's a sturdy wheat malt backbone, imparting notes of doughy bread that help keep the profile centered in the midst of various much stranger flavours. The smoked myrrh is a common thread throughout the sip, as is the sea saltiness, though neither one is necessarily an overpowering feature - each outlasts the lingonberry fruitiness that comes through by mid-sip, carrying over into a spicy, rather herbal, woodsy back end. Smoked resin, salty brine and Belgian yeast spiciness characterize the finish and linger briefly into the aftertaste, along with a touch of boozy sweetness. Medium-full in body, with moderately low carbonation levels that provide a gentle bite to the mouthfeel, which is otherwise kind of frothy, thick and soft. Very little sourness; an issue I have noted in every single Beau's gose that I have tried. I'm starting to think it's deliberate.

Final Grade: 3.64, a B grade. I know that goses don't need to be puckeringly acidic, but without at least some semblance of sourness present, I didn't even feel like I was drinking a gose as I sipped my glass of 49° 54°. Rather, it felt more like some sort of smoked spiced/herbed beer with salt in it. That's not a dealbreaker or anything - and for what it's worth, I more or less enjoyed my glass - but I'd still have a hard time recommending this to anyone seeking out an honest-to-goodness gose. Still, it was unique enough to be worth a shot, and probably the best of the three Beau's goses I've tried.
