It was a cool, rainy day in Crested Butte when we ducked in to the brewery. Had to try their flagship brew--and I can see why I've heard about this one!
Appearance was a light copper/amber, came to the table with a wee bit of head. Smell was of a good mix of malt and hops. It took about 30 seconds for this to become one of my favorite Colorado beers! The brewers have attained the perfect balance between malt and hops with this one. This is one of those rare beers that during the first sip, my eyes went wide with shock at how amazing it was. Excellent drinkability, this could become a standard in my fridge, if only it was available in the Denver area! It's worth the trip to Crested Butte!
UPDATE: purchased some bombers of this at the store next door, got them home, and was HUGELY disappointed--tasted flat, the hops were gone, and the maltiness had thinned out. It kind of sucked! What happened? This wasn't the beer I had on tap!

Poured from a 22oz bomber into a traditional pint glass.
This brew is named after the nearby Mt. Emmons, affectionately known in town as "Red Lady" due to its rocky-red appearance (when not snow covered). Only available on-tap or in bombers.
A - Pours an orange-copper color that is reasonably clear with a good one inch head. Head diminishes slightly, but about 1/4 inch sticks around for the long haul. Lacing is moderate.
S - Slightly roasted malt scent with a nice brown sugar addition. Mild hop presence.
T - Nice chewy, sweet malt starts things off. Subtle hints of roasted malt and an oaked wood flavor. As with scent, there is a mild hop presence that balances nicely but lets the malt take center stage.
M - Mild carbonation greets you with a slight chewiness. The subsequent mouthfeel can be a bit thin at times, but overall pretty decent. Ever so slightly dries in the aftertaste.
D - A drinkable brew that could be fairly sessionable. Not cloying or distracting, but well rounded. I will check it out on tap and report back.
