The brew appears a hazed reddish color with a white cap about a finger strong that retains well. Around the edges, some orange coloration is seen when held to the light.

The smell is earthy with a little fruit and citrus component. There is some cheese funk elements and more earthy almost grassy hop inclusion also present that integrates fairly well into the fruity alcohol esters.

The flavor is quite minerally. There is a carbonic aspect almost like chlorine present which was a bit off in the flavor profile. Some faint fruity notes were present but the carbonic/mineral aspect was modt prominent in the brew and that distracted from what one would expect in the style.

This is a light bodied brew with a modest amount carbonation. It is quite a unique take on the style and wasnt bad by any means, I think the carbonation got away on them and unfortunately it subsequently imparted some unpleasant notes.

Thanks to portableparty (RB) for dredging up this old Flat Earth bottle from who knows when. One of 500, but someone wet-fingered the number at some point in its history. 22 oz. bottle.

Pour looks suspiciously like unfiltered pond scum, brown, red, filmy, clearly with invasive species mixed in. Nose is tart & peppery, which doesn't seem bad.

Rode Haring is a beer I sorta liked when it came out, & it's better now. Make that much better. Tart & dry, it sings of fall berries left out in an oak barrel for a while to ferment in their own juices; the wood is excellent. Really, really dry, but that just invites more sipping. Only three ounces? I find myself strangely downcast.

This is, without a doubt, the best beer I've had from Flat Earth. A solid beer upon release, this one has aged beautifully. For those few who might still be hanging onto a bottle, drink it. It's ready. Excellent brew.

Thanks to portableparty (on the other site) for bringing this to the tasting last night. This bottle is about 3 years old. Bottle number is smudged but out of 500.

A- Pours a slightly hazy amber with a thin head that dissipates quickly, leaving no lacing behind.

S- Lots of cherry tartness upfront follow by musty blackberries and strawberries, vinegar, horse blanket, peppery spice and a hint of green apple and oak.

T- Again, tart fruit notes are prominent with musty cherry, strawberries and green apple followed by vinegar, horse blanket, peppery spice and oak.

M- Medium carbonation and a light body that finishes a bit dry.

O- This has held up incredibly well for a 3 year old Flanders. No oxidation and others at the tasting said that is more tart and overall better then when it was fresh. The surprise beer of the tasting for me.

Bottle number 365 /500. Looking forward to giving this one a go,

A-Copper with a medium, light tan head that reduced to a thin veil and left spotty lace.

S-Musty tartness and a touch of residual sweetness. Nothing overly complex but pleasant.

T-Earthy tartness with a kick of spicy hops and a touch of light sweetness in the background. Not very deep complexity wise.

M-Medium-light bodied, fairly crisp with light lingering tartness and a dry finish.

D-Not "bad" but....IMO the tartness needs bumped up to be a true Flanders Red. A decent effort but needs some tweaking.

184 of 500... Poured by ditmier at his house a long while back... reviewed from notes.. wish I would have done better... Thanks Eric.. This was on my wants for a long time.

Poured into my small La Trappe glass.. hazy deep red/orange brew with a lite head that dies back fairly quick to a pretty descent cap..

Nose is interesting.. sour cherries intermingling with currants.. lite funk and not alot else going on.. light acetic elements are the only thing keeping me going here.

Flavor is not nearly as good as I was hoping for.. just enough of a cherry blast to keep it in style.. the sour is more refined to an acetic note ... lite vinous elements help a bit.. descent body and a good carbonation, but the overall beer leaves me wanting more.. seems to be a little flat overall....

Despite my negatives, I actually think this is a good attempt on an elusive style.. especially for Americans... It's tough to get things dialed in and make them consistent... I will certainly try to score this one again... I dig the attempt.. just not this bottle.

Wonderful hand bottled and delivered to my door. This one I had been waiting for a while for. Served chilled and poured into a snifter, this one was consumed on 06/28/2009.

The pour was nice. Light reddish tint to a mostly brown looking Ale. Small head of off white on top that only barely escaped the glass before settling back down into just a thin crown along the sides and the bottom of the glass. Nice tart aroma was just what I was looking for. Light touches of what seemed to be raspberry, hints of light woody note. Nice clean flavor here. Not the most exploratory thing I have had at first, but letting it warm up did wonders. Brought out a nice mellow and richly tart flavor. Vinegar and apples, hints of dark fruits and a smooth, almost grassy note to it. Really nice stuff I have to admit. Very drinkable as the ABV was hardly noticeable. Overall a very solid ale I would gladly go for again. Very happy to have the chance to try it.

750 mL bottle poured into a Maredsous chalice. Enjoyed in the kitchen downstairs on moving day, on the first full day in my new place. Warm sun, cool breeze, great brew.

A-Pretty clear copper-amber brew, sports an attractive glowing hue. Bubbly tan head quickly recedes, but is easily revived with a small shake, releasing some of this beer's effervescent carbonation.

S-Puckery tart, like concentrated green apple (sans sweetness), with a funky twist. Very fresh.

T-Slight initial malt sensation is immediately overwhelmed by a tart/funky flavor with hints of fruitiness. Finishes clean, very dry, with a slight lingering tartiness.

M-Effervescent carbonation compliments the refreshingly light-medium body. My mouth is not weighed down by this beer at any time, especially in it's clean finish.

D-Pretty darn good! Refreshing, but still complex and out of the ordinary. A good representation of style. Although it sounds like it may be a while before Flat Earth releases this one again, I look forward to enjoying a few more bottles at that time.

one of the only flander reds from the twin cities... and a wonderful beer with a mild introduction to the style for the area. looks as it should with a reddish murky. a nose of bread and vanilla. soft cherry. not so much tart as expected. the woody nature is yeasty. not so much dry. somewhat sweet and mild with a very nice vanilla that doesn't bring out the alcohol. sort of surprised that its so high in abv and so mild without as much in the nose... or compromising of the vanilla esters for that matter.

Light tan 1 finger head with good retention. Hazy brown/copper beer.

Smells of sweet malts, spices, dark fruits, raisins and plums.

Tastes like green apples! Tart, some malts, but not as much as in the smell. Spices come in at the end of the drink.

Mouthfeel has light/fine carbonation. Clean to drink, clean finish.

Drinks decently. Splitting a bomber of this was the way to go.

Poured into New Belgium Globe Glass. Bottle 164/500

Pours a 1/2 finger fluffy slightly browned head. Settles down quickly. Doesn't leave a lot of lace. Color is a ruby brown, slight grape fruit color. Very appealing color.

Aroma: Wow I can taste the funk (yeast) in this beast. Very fruity. Dark dried fruits. Raisins. Pretty good.

Taste: Sour green apples. Yeasty funk. Dark dried fruits. Grapes. Wine like taste to it.

Mouthfeel: A little crisp. Very tarty and sweet. Medium bodied and carbonation. Leaves a dry dried fruit aftertaste.

Overall: I am sipping on this beer but it is quite tasty. I am glad I am splitting this bottle with a buddy. Very interesting, I really like the style. I am glad that Flat Earth put out a beer like this and I hope they make more of these interesting types.

Thanks to brewseum for this bottle, number 365 of 500.

A: The red ale is appropriately a derivation on amber, probably more brown than red though. A tiny head bubbled up on pour then disappeared.

S: The nose is very medicinal, a blast of acetaminophen. A mild tartness lurks behind the medicine. The tartness lacks a vinegary element (which I just happen to dislike).

T: The medicine jumps out again in the first sip. The flavor is strong, dominating the first part of each sip. Graininess follows but doesn't overcome the bite upfront. The tartness is more acidic, lacking the vinegary acetic flavors that come from many Flemish reds. But even that tartness is fleeting, rushing away as quickly as it arrived.

M: The mouthfeel does offer some redeeming berry sweetness but not enough to make it work. A stronger emphasis of that acidity could have overcome the medicinal aspects.

D: This is not my favorite style by any stretch, so it's tough to be objective. I'm glad that I had a number of people to share the bottle with.

A= Pours a dark brown color with the red shining through in the thin parts of my glass. A minuscule head comes out of it and falls to nothing.
S= A little funk and some cherries? Maybe some vinegar in there.
T= Pretty funky with a small sour note after swallowing. A little vinegar taste and definite cherries on the tip of my tounge.
M= Fizzy feeling like alka seltzer almost. Pretty good.
D= New to the style. I've never had this type of beer but I do like it. It's a little different but I can definitely understand it and get what they were going for. Very nice beer. Hopefully it can become more available.

A steady pour into my 25cl tulip glass produces an almost three-finger thick, amber tinged, light tan colored head. The beer has a dark cherry color to it that shows a brilliantly clear, copper tinged, red stained hue when held up to the light. The aroma smells of fruit, musty earth, toasty malt and a touch of sourness. The sourness seems to accentuate a cherry like aromatic as well as a touch of cranberry and some other tart berry notes. This has a bit of a malt backbone to it, though perhaps not quite as much as one migh expect in the style, that reminds me of a touch of biscuit notes, a hint of caramelized malt and perhaps even a hint of walnuts. The tartness here is fairly light, but does seem to have a hint of acetic character to it along with the slightly more noticeable lactic character. A touch of musty, earthy aromas hint at a Brettanomyces presence, but this doesn't have a full on barnyard funkiness to it. Not a bad aroma, though it does seem a touch tame.

Pretty light bodied with a fairly high level of carbonation, the combination produces a fizzy, watered down effect after the first sip. Releasing some of the carbonation helps a bit, but this remains fairly light bodied; it is not quite watery though as it does have a touch of heft to it as it rolls across the tongue. This has a light, but persistent tartness to it that tastes of lactic acidity; there is a touch of a grapefruit effect here as well as some flavors similar to tart pomegranate and perhaps a touch of other berry like notes. There is a touch of astringency in the finish that mixes with the tartness, but tastes a little plastic like.

Not bad, but somehow not all that interesting either. This has a hint of complexity to it in the aroma, but the flavor is fairly bland for a beer of this style. It definitely needs more acidity, and more, even some, funkiness would be a welcome addition.

A - Deep red, mahogany. Keeps to the style

S - Sour and the Belgium yeast smell with a raspberry hint. Very unique smell.

T - Pungent sour. Makes your face pucker almost every time. Very big malt backup and acidic.

M - Sour tingly feel. Carbonation is perfect for this beer. The tongue feels rough and dry afterward.

Final Toughts: This beer style is getting very popular and I am starting to like them. These beers are an intense experience and should not be taken lightly =)

Appearance: Poured with 1cm off white bubbly head that dissipated leaving no lacing. The beer is a clear orangish-reddish brown.

Smell: Tangy raspberry, slight charcoal smell, and some sourness.

Taste: Sour tangy up front, leading to a tangy sweet, followed by a roasted malt, and the after taste is similar to a pretzel.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied, tart feeling in the beginning, leaves mouth dry, low carbonation

Overall: Fairly drinkable, begins sour then leads to a roasted malt. First of this style for me, and I enjoyed it! Alcohol not noticeable.

Bottle #226 of 500. Thanks Tyler!!! Shared with friends. Poured into a tasting glass. Pours a rich, murky red with a thin white head that fades quickly. SMells of vinegar, sour dark fruits and barnyard, but not overcooked. Softer aromas, not BAM in your face. Taste is similar. Lots of tartness up front, but it mellows and softens. The cherries, sour apple and vinegar flavors ar not mouth puckering, but certainly are there. That is why this vbeer is extremely drinkable. Nice smooth mouthfeel. Would love to have more!

A- lightly hazed red/orange colored beer. Small bubbly head that dissipates quickly, No lacing.

S- Good sweet caramel and lots of sour yeasty aromas. Hint of nuttiness and some alcohol present.

T- Lots of Sour bite up front with a nice nuttiness and hint of sweet caramel. Biscuity dry roasted malt aftertaste.

M- Medium bodied beer with puckering sour mouth feel and good carbonation. Pretty dry in the end.

Overall- This is an interesting beer. It is the first Flanders Red I have had so it is hard do judge. I am not sure I would buy it again.

This is bottle #69 of 500. Lucky 69....

Poured from a 750ml brown bottle into an oversized snifter. A semi-rigerous pour reveals a 1 inch white head. Receeding quickly to a small colar. Lace is thin and slippery leaving little sign of its presence.
The color is a brilliant pale amber with a bit of unfiltered hazyness.

Aroma is very nice with cherries dark fruits, almost fig newton like with its dark fruity figs and buttery bread, not a cookie but a fruited cake. Cherries, a little snap of hop spicieness, cherries are more tart in aroma with a hint strawberrie citrus aroma.

The taste is sharp and tart up front, carbonation all the way through. A good amount of fermented fruitieness and somthing like strawberries. Carbonation zings my toungue. Becoming increasingly dry at the swallow with a citric acid like snap and down the esaphagus.

I'm not a huge sour fan, but this is close in resemblence and I do enjoy it.
The citric acid burn is minimal, but that aspect is not so enjoyable.
Interesting brew, recommend if you can find it.

A- Pours a 1 finger white head, over a semi-chill hazed copper orange color. No sediment is present.

S- Big on funk. Definitely some Brett here. Big notes of sour apples, vinegar, wet hay, tart cherries, as well as some buttery notes.

T- Starts out with notes of sour apple, some wet hay, nice funk from the brett, a nice dry tartness blankets the palette on the finish. Tart cherry notes also come into play on the extremely long finish.

M- Nice acidity, and low-med carbonation.

D- This is listed on the bottle as 5.7% and not the 7% listed on BA. Overall this is a pretty good Flanders but not quite a buttery as most. Definitely one of the best in the lineup, however. Definitely give this a shot if you can find the limited bottling, or catch it on tap.

750 ml poured into generic pint glass

Appearance: Dark red/orange with half inch white head and nice lacing.

Smell: Biscuit malt, spice, and tart cherry.

Taste: Sourness hits right away with the tart cherry flavor and then has a smokiness to the ending, tobacco flavor maybe. The sour is balanced by a nice sweetness and funky yeast flavors.

Mouthfeel: Smooth going down and the sourness will make your mouth water.

Drinkability: If this was more readily available I'd drink it all the time. Wish I would have bought two bottles.

Overall: Delicious beer from Flat Earth. My hat goes off to them for brewing this. Seek this out.

It seems fitting to drink a Flanders Red Ale brewed here in Minnesota to say goodbye to one year, and hello to another. Bottle number 483 of 500. This beer pours a clear deep ruby color. The head is an inch in height, and recedes very slowly into thick chunky lacing which sticks to the sides of the glass. The aroma is of cherry, nuts, green apples, some nice sourness and tartness, and lots of bretta. The taste is of a little less sour than the aroma. There is more nuttiness, more cherry, and a hint of caramel. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with sharp carbonation. Overall, this is a wonderful beer that I would love to have the opportunity to drink again. Even if it doesn't get brewed again I would still like to tip my hat to the people at Flat Earth for taking a big risk in making this beer.

On-tap at the Nile (where the heck was Al?), served in a Kasteel goblet. Appears a slightly hazy red-amber, with emphasis on the red, and a short, white head.

Damn, this beer could be straight out of Belgium for all I know upon tasting. Seriously, someone made this in St. Paul? This style-accuracy by American breweries is very hard to come by in sour ales and I think this puts Flat Earth up in the elite class of Jolly Pumpkin and Russian River.

At first it reminds me of Rodenbach Classic for similar sour fruits that don't hit you over the head with funk. As I sip more, I realize these flavors are gentler and more drinkable. It reminds me of the drinkability of Goudenband on-tap. I'm tasting tangy lemon rind and oak with a bit of sweet cherries. Oh man, this is good. I suppose it could be more complex, but I'm very satisfied.

On tap, and into my favorite Big Ass Tripel Karmeliet glass.

Thoroughly hazed, deep garnet hue, nearing magenta, big, white head.

Pungent aromatics, sour cherries all the way, loud and proud. Sweet malt and funky yeast in there, too, lying underneath the tartness.

Taste: smooth and mellow. Those expecting a super sour explosion on the palate will be disappointed, but others, like myself, will find this refreshingly drinkable. A blast of cherry flavors, a little wild, and just tart enough, with underlying sweet malt, ending dry.

Really tasty! And, happily, very easy to down. Not a face twister or a pucker-upper, but a well-balanced, fresh, lively and rewarding brew. Others have said it, and I concur, that this may be their best effort yet.

A- Honey color with a thine white head and not activity.

S- Sour nose a slight tinge makes my mouth water.

T- Somewhat sour but not like the nose would suggest the sour is nice but mild. I would almost call this a starter sour. A touch yeasty at the end.

M- Nice thickness and good activity.

D- Very drinkable but leaves me wanting something a touch more sour. But probably the best beer out of Flat Earth so far.

According to the brewer Jeff, Rode Haring is Dutch for Red Herring. On tap at Autumn Beer Review in Minneapolis, I made plenty of notes since I didn't want to rely on a fuzzy memory. Anyway, appearance is slightly cloudy amber-orange with ruby highlights and a lacy off-white head. Aroma is of wonderfully sweet, bready malt and a hint of tart sour cherries. Not much hop aroma but I did note faint flowery noble hops. Taste is very complex and difficult to pin down any dominating flavors. Again with the sweet bready malts. Just a touch of hop bitterness and flowery hop flavor. There's pronounced tartness but the sweet malt balances, if not dances with the tartness. There's a bit of a wine-like flavor and alchohol in the finish which can only be described as "medium". Neither really too sweet or too dry. Mouthfeel is right in the middle as well which makes this beer very smooth and drinkable and along with the sweet-tart flavors it's also very refreshing. Very complex and layered beer. I think Flat Earth is really on to something special with this one.
