Great Divide Brewing Co. "Peppermint Bark Yeti"

$9.49 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: This is either an easy review or a hard review, let's see. The basics are already there as everyone knows the regular Yeti or can look it up. Great beer! The questions are: Do the added ingredients make it a better or worse beer? Or, do they make it enough of a different beer? So what do we actually have here? - added peppermint chunks, vanilla, and chocolate. I'll assume the peppermint chunks are actually hard sugar candy. That comes through foremost of all the ingredients in both the aroma and flavor. The vanilla adds some sweetness, or at least the suggestion of it, and the chocolate tends to lie towards the back with the rest of the dark and malty Imperial stout base. The mint lends it a nice coolness that contrasts the sweetness, and helps to keep it dry in the finish. Is it a better beer because of the added ingredients? Not at all. It's different, but not better. Is it worse? Well, it's not quite as good as the original. It's different but it's mostly the same. It's more complex in some ways, but at the same time the newer notes cover up some of the notes that were already there. To a certain extent I think they've done a wonderful job in that. There are other versions and I wonder if they're just as good. But let me ask, how good is it? I could take it or leave it. In fact, I might actually prefer the original unadulterated Yeti myself. I wouldn't buy this again. It was nice to try but that's about it so, in fact, I find the "peppermint bark" addition to have hurt the beer.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a quite fizzy, very dark mahogany brown, appearing nearly opaque in the glass with a thin khaki head that dissipates to patches with no lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, peppermint, cocoa and light coffee. Flavor is dark toasted malt with light char, milk chocolate, light peppermint and light mocha coffee. Medium bodied with light creaminess. Well, not quite what I expected, but pleasant. The malt seems quite subdued and not at all the depth of Yeti or most of its variants and the mouth feel is rather thin. However, once past that, there is a lot to like here. As expected, the flavor balance is great, with the malt that initially tasted mellow still well supporting the cocoa and light coffee flavors. Best of all, the peppermint is just right for my palate; I was expecting and big holiday burst of mint, but instead, it has fine peppermint flavor, but a fine light to moderate balance with the other flavors. Possibly the best use of mint in a stout I've tasted. So a bit of a roller coaster taste-wise, underwhelming at first, but then I liked this better and better as I drank it and appreciated its flavor integration. A best of all the big ABV is hardly noticeable; I had to pace myself to not drink this too fast. I like this even more than I expected from the name. I should trust Great Divide. Yeti has always been a great stout. Not a fan of the 19oz. Cans for big stouts, but managed ok.

Not my favorite Yeti iteration but still nice, the peppermint is in balance with the rest of the stout flavors; underlying roasty notes of coffee and cocoa. Thinner body than I was expecting. Overall, OK-to-good.

On tap in the home kegerator is a much better option than the can. BUT!!! The can option is not bad, just has a slightly noticeable change in the aroma profile

Another iteration of the standard yeti, with stuff added. Pretty darn good tho, as are all of them. Definitely very peppermint. How can you go wrong with great divide?

Pour is black but not as much as yeti typically is.
Minimal khaki head
Nose is subtle peppermint and chocolate

Taste is peppermint, creamy chocolate, less toasty than typical yeti. Subtle chocolate.

Sits pitch black in the glass with less than half a finger of tan head

The aroma reminds of Andes mints, but just with the volume turned all the way down. Subtle peppermint and dark chocolate is even more subdued. Big Imperial Stout characteristics are also absent. Aside from a barely there Listerine smell, this is pretty bland on the nose.

I'm happy to report the taste yields a much different experience than the aroma. My comparison will go back to the aforementioned Andes mints as this is a peppermint and dark chocolate BOMB! Seriously, how does the aroma come off so subtle it borders on nothing, but the taste is just an assault on the senses? It's actually quite a feat in brewing.

Additionally, big vanilla notes woth even subtle char and tobacco for good measure add complexity to the dessert-like profile.

Thick and viscous body with no booze to be found. It's a big sipper for sure, and even a sugar bomb to boot, but I am enjoying every minute of this ride.

Chocolate Stout lover rejoice and you can even invite the peppermint fans along. If the aroma turned you away thinking this would be a big ole glass of meh, then man did the flavors of this decadent indulgence quickly turn me into a believer. Great for the holiday season, but hell, I would gladly enjoy this any time of year.

Poured from a can. Dark with a tan head that dissipates quickly. Smells of roasted grain and peppermint. Flavors of chocolate, roasted grain, peppermint and vanilla. Pretty smooth with lots of flavor. The higher avb is hidden very well.

Drinking this at one of my favorite tap rooms, Tapped Craft and Drafts in Greenville NC.
Poured from a into a tulip glass.
Looks dark brown almost black with a nice foamy tannish head that dropped quickly to a thin cap.
Smells malty, sweet, chocolate, vanilla, peppermint.
Taste follows the nose nicely.
Mouth feel is medium for the style.
Overall a very nice example of a Imperial Stout that I would definitely order again.

Decent creaminess with mint flavor so the adjuncts seem properly used. I think this is another pretty good rendition of a pretty solid brew in general. I hope they still release the PB one too.
