Birra Amiata "Bastarda Rossa"
330 ml can coded "Lotto: L22072 DA CONSUMARSI PERFERIBILMENTE ENTRO: 31/08/23". Sampled on 19/02/23.
Notes via stream of consciousness: I'm not sure why I'm a fan of chestnut beers, I just am, so let's see what this red bastard has to offer. It's a little darker than red in my opinion, and more like a mahogany brown with ruby highlights. It's mostly clear although there is a touch of haze. The head is a short cap of yellowed khaki foam. In the nose you really get a nutty sweetness that seems almost buttery. There's some caramel there as well, and lots of straightforward cereal-like grain. On to the taste, it follows the aroma as is often the case, but there's more to it. The nuttiness is massive, and much bigger than many of the chestnut beers that I've sampled in the past. The caramel is golden and a little bit medium-reddish as well. I'm finding some dark dried fruit, but just a touch, and a subtle spiciness. Have they added some nutmeg to this? Interesting. There's an almost Ovaltine-like flavor to the malt and I wonder how they got that. It's on the sweet side but not "sweet", and there's a median bitterness that comes forward halfway across the palate leading to a dry finish. I'm not detecting a lot of hops here but there seems to be some leafy and delicately herbal character in the finish. The head has died by this point and I have only a collar to look at as there was no lacing left behind. I'll note that this is a beer clean glass and I had a fair amount of lacing left behind on my last beer. I think it's the oils from the chestnuts that mightt be killing the head, and so it gets a little bit of a pass. In the mouth it's medium bodied and gently crisp with a moderate, fine-bubbled carbonation. It warms in the mouth to become quite smooth. I'm going to call this one a winner for it's sweetish and creamy caramel and nutty flavor and aroma.

From BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #66 (July 2012):
LOOK: Turbid amber, expressive carbonation, massive head
SMELL: Yeasty, figs, peppercorn, nutmeg, chestnuts, spicy, estery, honey
TASTE: Dry, grassy, biscuity, yeast, alcoholic, warm, earthy, mildly herbal, musty, figgy, chestnuts, slightly bitter, treacle, buckwheat honey; herbal, dry finish
Some would say raw, others would simply notice its natural state. Perhaps a bit too natural, with an aggressive yeast profile, from smell to taste. There is something about this brew that wins us over, perhaps as simple as that it is different.

Served in a tumbler.
This has got to be the most interesting of the Amiata beers currently available in these parts. It pours a a hazy sunrise topaz-amber topped by a finger of off-cream-white foam. The nose comprises dry toffee, mild and nondescript nuts, light honey-coated biscuit, and a general earthy-green hop character in the background. The taste brings in more of the same, but it's all semi-subservient to a newcomer: a sort of hickory-style smoke. This smoke isn't exactly powerful, per se, but it's pervasive and bright. In all fairness, this could just be what heavily-roasted chestnuts taste like (I have not partaken), but it certainly comes across as a sweet, lightly woody, almost barbecue sauce-infused smoke. It lends a nice thick layer of complexity to what would otherwise likely have been a fairly boring little farmhouse-ish brew. I actually enjoyed my pour of this. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a sorta/kinda dry finish. Overall, not a bad beer, thanks mostly to that smoky component. It's something that'll either impress with its charm of mild difference or come across as a pretty boring, only-semi-inspired beer.

The beer is clouded amber, with a warm off-white high and firm head leaving some lacing. Good curtains.
Smelling mostly of the malt, grain, hay and dust. Some dried fruit.
Sweet white bread, a hint of dried apricots.
Medium carbonation, soft and foamy, a faint dryness.
Very modest, nothing bad, but a bit boring.

With chestnuts.
Hazy amber color, with a quite beautiful beige foam, compact.
In the smell, chestnut. Under that, maltiness, and a light honey.
Full taste, definitely a lot of chestnut. Not bad, but maybe it turns a bit too much toward the sweet side.
Again chestnut in the aftertaste, malty, sweet.
Maybe a bit too monotone, and without a great drinkability, but not bad, after all.
