man this is really tasty, and quite distinct from the crowd of coffee beers as well. might be my favorite of the dakota beers i have had on my trip so far. as brown as it is black, not the darkest example of the style, but it has a nice tan head and some real viscosity. it smells fantastic, sweeter than most, with a lot of coffee, and the coffee is very different too, more nutty and sweet than i am used to in the style, seemingly driven by notes of hazelnut and brown sugar, it has a lot going on. it has a much sweeter malt complexion too than i think the style calls for, heavy caramels in the middle of this linger long, and the normally bitter and roasty and coffee finish never really comes about because of the sugars here. its not a bad thing, but for me it really does limit drinkability. i like the lighter body, and its well carbonated from the tap, well made for sure, but i find myself wishing it was a little drier. good use of oats though, and very tasty coffee in this one. a few tweaks and its a total winner...
