Birrificio Doppio Malto "Imperiale"
6,80€ / 40 cl alla spina @ Doppio Malto - Milano Duomo, Milano, IT on 28 November 2025
Look: Its clear dark brown body appears black in the full glass beneath a light tan head of foam. Ruby, crimson, and orange highlights can be seen when held to the light.
Smell: Roasty and toasty with some herbal hops.
Taste: Stronger than the aroma lets on with additional caramel and some cocoa powder, as well as more hop flavor that's herbal and almost licorice-like. It's balanced by a solid bitterness that probably surpasses 70 IBUs, and it finishes dry, roasty, and herbal. The alcohol at 9% has a fairly clear presence but is otherwise very well kept in check.
Feel: Medium-full in body and smooth.
Overall: It's quite nicely done but lacks that special character that takes a beer from very good to great.

400ml pour at the taphouse in Milan. Entering review from notes.
Pours dark reddish-black, slightly translucent. Dense, creamy head. Thick lacing. Smell is roasty, burnt molasses, grain, bread. Taste is lots of roast bitterness. Grapefruit rind. Roast chocolate. Vague nuttiness. Mouthfeel is smooth, creamy, dry finish. Overall, not bad.
