From the draft at the Waikiki location. Nice appearance overall, with a nice head in the flight glass. In the nose, it is roasted malt and a touch of coconut. In the mouth, a bit of the same. Nice porter!

Poured from a 750ml bottle purchased from the brewery back in March 2019.

Appearance - Pours a dark chocolate brown with two fingers of foamy tan head.

Smell - roasted malts, chocolate, toasted coconut, mocha, earthy and leafy hops, nutty aromas, and earth yeast.

Taste - earthy and leafy hops upfront then quickly goes into the roasted malts, chocolate, coconut, and mocha. The nutty aromas and earthy yeast round out the brew.

Mouthfeel - Medium to full bodied with light carbonation. Finishes velvety smooth and creamy with the chocolate and coconut lingering.

Overall - A robust and flavourful imperial porter. Excellent chocolate and mocha flavours from the roasted malts though I wish it had a tad more coconut flavour. Other than that a superb brew that is worth checking out if you find yourself at the taproom.

A nice porter to start or finish your day with. It has a nice tan head with a toffee, coffee, and dark chocolate esters. The coconut comes out in the first swallow along with dark malt and chocolate finish. It has a smooth rich mouth feel that leaves you wanting more. I highly recommend you try it im you ever visit Maui Brewing Company in Kihei, Hi

Thanks to Alex for another great Maui beer.
Dark brown body with a solid one and a half finger foamy head poured from a growler.
The aroma and taste is a great balance roasted malts and sweet coconut. Hints of dark chocolate with nice bitterness in the finish.
Heavy body but not sluggish, especially for an imperial porter.

On draft at the tasting room in Kihei. Dark black body, good opacity, one finger offwhite head, good retention. Smell is big coconut sweetness, balanced by a hefty dark cocoa bitterness, a bit of milk chocolate, light earthy grain. Flavour follows; nice balance, fairly sweet but good earthy bitterness and cocoa helps balance it out. Smooth, creamy, medium in body, nice carbonation, big yet well-balanced.

I admit it's been about 1 year since I had this brew in the Lahaina venue. From my notes, the Porter was awesome. Looked good, smelled good, tasted great, and good moth feel for a Porter. Can't wait to get back there in 2 weeks.

Appearance - The beer poured a deep murky brown color with a whitish head.

Smell - Coffee was most present in the nose, but like coconut notes were also there.

Taste - Coffee really jumps to the front and the taste. There are chocolate notes and the coconut seems rather light. Coconut seemed more present in the feel and the taste. Strong coffee notes continued in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - The feel was smooth like coconut milk.

Overall - I often find myself wanting more coconut and coconut beers. That is the case with this one as well

On tap at the Kihei brewery. Smells and tastes quite delicious. Lots of coconut going on here and the abv is well disguised. Feels a bit light for the style but is excellent nonetheless .

On tap at Maui Brewing Co

A: Pours dark brown, nearly black, with a frothy khaki head that settles to a thin layer and leaves some light lacing.

S: Roasty toasted coconut, chocolate, light coffee, earthy, and toffee sweetness. Basically a Mounds bar.

T: Chocolate fudge, a little spice, just the right amount of coconut, roasty, earthy, slightly herbal, and toffee sweetness.

M: Full body, moderate carbonation, just a touch of warmth.

O: Been wanting to try this one for a while. Got it at the source it's fantastic

Enjoyed a snifter for dessert on 6-6-18 while visiting the Lahaina brewpub for $6.25.

Beer was served cola brown with a smallish off white head that dissipated quickly.

Nose was coconut and cocoa forward, very nice.

Taste followed the nose. Lightly roasted malts formed the base with cocoa and coconut additions lending a sweet dessert taste to this. Hopping was just enough to make it so it was a well balanced dessert.

I found the mouthfeel to be have a delicate body for an imperial style, very silky smooth. Reminded me of the Speedway Stout feel.

Overall a delicious brew, glad i followed my instincts and had this after lunch. This is probably a one and done brew for most folks.

Pours an effervescent mahogany with 2 fingers of mocha colored head. Average head retention & lacing

S: Dark chocolate, coffee, toasted coconut, fades a touch as this warms

T: Follows the nose, a little vanilla & caramel, plus plenty of dryness from the coconut up front. More chcocolate, a touch of woody hops, a little booze, toasty coconut in spades as this warms. Finishes with a whisper of mocha, toasty coconut & dryness, just a little booze

MF: Pretty chewy, fairly firm carbonation

Much to like about this one. Coconut is restrained enough to allow the cocoa to shine as well. Glad I pulled the trigger on this one

L: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a dark brown / black color and a thick, opaque consistency. There was a quarter inch of foamy, tan-colored head that lasted a below average amount of time. Not much lacing.

S: A very nice aroma of roasted malt, coconut, chocolate, and caramel.

T: Tasted of a good shot of milk chocolate (always welcome), a tinge of caramel, a lot of roasted malt (mostly in the finish), a decent amount of coconut, and light hops. A much more subtle flavor than I expected, but it still manages to be likable. Very well-balanced and flavorful.

F: A good amount of carbonation with a dry, smooth finish. Medium-bodied.

O; This is a solidly made, highly enjoyable porter. It wasn't cheap, but it was worth it.

Draft at Rock & Brews in Paia, Maui. Very dark brown-black appearance with medium foam upon pour. This just has a ton of roasted malt and especially coconut in smell. Screams you're about to drink a dessert beer, which it is. Plenty of chocolate in there as well along with loads of coconut. Roasty and dark. Quite sweet and smooth. No hint of booze. But it is a bit thin 9.4% abv.

Didn't complete a formal review due to small serving size, but definitely one of the best coconut porters I've had to date. Wonder if they roasted the coconut first, as it was so nice and complimentary rather than abbrasive and artificial/ metallic as I've found it in some other beers. Would love to find a bottle!

Update: 10 oz tulip pour at Davis Beer Shoppe.

L: Black with brown edges. Limited tan head has surprisingly resilient head with a ring that never seems to dissipate and left mixed lacing.

S: Nice balanced prominent, yet not overpowering, nose. Semi-sweet chocolate, coconut, some roast and perhaps a smidgen of rye?

T: Coconut is so complimentary, blends, maintains influence without being artificial. Other elements follow nose prominence. Slightly sweet finish.

F: Medium bodied with low-medium carbonation, slick on the tongue and finish.

O: Outstanding porter for my palate and preferences, definitely want more...as evidence by seeking it out again the day after first taste. Definitely in the lead for my best beer of 2018.

The coconut falls off on this one pretty fast. Easy drinking for a high abv, but about 4 months old the coconut is almost not there. Recommended, but drink fresh

Having tried Hiwa and enjoying it, this was on my short list. I'm sorry but this was a flop. I had high hopes. It smells like burnt coconut and rubbing alcohol. Tastes much like Hiwa, but with a cup of burnt alcohol.

It's basically a "get drunk faster" harsh version of Hiwa. Nothing original or exciting about this one. Just have a 4 pack and skip the bomber.

750 ml bottle into snifter, no bottle dating. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, toasted coconut, caramel, fudge, marshmallow, toffee, and dark/brown bread; with light notes of vanilla, cream, coffee, almonds, smoke, char, herbal, and roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt, coconut, cocoa nib, and light earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of huge milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, toasted coconut, caramel, fudge, marshmallow, toffee, and dark/brown bread; with light notes of vanilla, cream, coffee, almonds, smoke, char, herbal, and roast/toasted earthiness. Very mild herbal hop and roast/char bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, toasted coconut, caramel, fudge, marshmallow, toffee, dark/brown bread, vanilla, cream, coffee, almonds, smoke, char, herbal, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, coconut, cocoa nib, and light earthy hop flavors; with an awesome roasted bitter/sweet balance; and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy, silky, velvety, and rich mouthfeel that is fantastic. Light sticky hops, chalky roast, and dryness. Zero warming alcohol for 9.4%. Overall this is an amazing flavored imperial porter! All around incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, coconut, cocoa nib, and light earthy hop flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to drink for the big ABV. I love the regular beer, but this is definitely a huge step up on richness. Super fudgey and dessert like, but never cloying or overly sweet. Perfect balance of coconut, cocoa nib, and base porter malt complexity. A really amazing offering.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle, 2017 batch. The nose is luscious, with coconut, milk chocolate, dried banana chips, and yeast rolls. On the palate, the flavor profile is a bit less balanced and enticing, with some baking soda on the finish. A solid improvement over the "regular" version of Maui's coconut porter, which I definitely enjoyed when first getting more into craft beer, but I'm not sure it's such a game-changer as to justify the significantly higher price point.

The beer pours a nice brown head that dissipates very quickly while the beer itself is a syrupy looking coffee black color.

The smell and taste are pretty good. The smell comes off as a bit toasted coconut light, but still accentuates the smell well, with a more caramel sweetness and light cocoa being the most noticeable notes to it. The taste is the opposite with a more none toasted coconut note mixing with a sweet caramel and milk chocolate note with a hint of cocoa bitterness to it.

The feel is a bit light but still medium bodied with a syrupy texture to it. Not bad.

Overall, pretty good but extremely pricey.

Appearance - Pours jet black with thick mocha colored head that lasts for a good while and settles to a thin film on top.

Aroma - Lots of rich chocolate, vanilla, roasted malts, a slight hint of toasted coconut with a little coffee underneath.

Taste - The toasted coconut comes out much more in the taste really forward. some nice chocolate and vanilla along with light roasted malts and again some very subtle coffee. Flavors are very balanced.

Feel - Medium bodied well carbonated slick feel.

Overall - A very well done coconut porter, more coconut than most beers I have had.

From the growler via (censored since they should not of sold it to us) in a snifter
with a hearty THANK YOU to those involved. This fine porter pours a deep rich muddled
brownish black with a nice head of off white foam that settles to a thick ring, light wafting
layer, and displays light soapy lacing. Nose of subtleties; light cocoa, light coffee, light vanilla,
light toasted coconut, and sweet malts. Flavors hit the mark with BALANCE, BALANCE, and a
heaping helping of BALANCE. Toasted coconut wafts over medium notes of dark dark chocolate
that mingles with dark roasted coffee and notes of vanilla and marshmallow with a sneaky booze
lying in wait in the background with toffee and subtle char. Excellent mouth feel; medium full body,
light carbonation, lightly slick, and a warming lightly coating finish that is fantastically balanced and
inviting.

In total, this is a fantastic porter that deeply beats the original that I liked but would
not care for more than one in a session. This one you could enjoy endlessly.

Excellent.

Cheers and congratulations to a fine brew from a fine brewery.

Pours deep chocolate brown with a slightly disappointing light tan head, or lack there of I should say. Minimal lacing. Aroma is much more impressive with roasted coffee and grain, chocolate, and toasted coconut. The flavors blend seamlessly with coconut taking center stage but not overwhelming. Chocolate and vanilla come through in the end, especially as it warms. Feel is smooth, somewhat creamy, but not at all as thick as one would assume with its rich abv. Overall, this is a wonderful flavored porter, and just what you'd think Hiwa's big brother should be. Cheers!

750ml bottle served in a large snifter. Can't find a date on it.

Pours very dark, with a biggish light brown head. Lots of carbonation. Smell is toasted coconut. Also a little chocolate.

Taste is super rich, very strong coconut. VERY strong coconut. Coffee and chocolate.

Mouthfeel is thick and creamy.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing nearly opaque in the glass with a half finger light brown head with great retention and nice lacing. Aroma of semi-sweet dark toasted malt, cocoa, coconut, mild vanilla. Flavor is toasted malt, milk chocolate, coconut, vanilla, hint of caramel. Finishes roasty and full, fresh coconut. Medium bodied with light creaminess. A richer flavored version of the already good Hiwa Coconut Porter. Malt is deeper and the coconut is more intense, but totally supported by the malt. Nice chocolatey notes. Flavorful throughout into the great chocolate coconut and malt finish. Yum.
