Poured at the tap house into a Tulip. Appearance is a hazy crimson with beige head that fades to a thin ring, and leaves behind light lacing through the drink. The color is amazingly red.
Smells of funky cheese, parmesan, strawberry, a good Balsamic vinegar note is high, but not out of style or beer wrecking. Pie cherry notes linger under the vinegar with pineapple, lemon, and phenolic spice. Touch mousy.
Big malty note up front that gives way to a Lactic tartness and a sharper vinegar flavor. Dark fruits weave their way through the sour bite, with light berry in the aftertaste, only on the exhale. Light char and oak, touch of oxidation.
Medium to light body, low carbonation, fairly dry finish, but not totally dry. Light tannic pull on the back of the mouth with a sharp acetic finish.
Good Flanders, the Balsamic note is an interesting way to get the noteable acetic acid of the Flander's Red style and it works well here, not overdone at all. The strawberry notes are low, but strawberry is hard to get even in a beer style much lighter than this one. Big malty overtones and dark fruit complexity, with good Brett funk in the nose, just doesn't carry through as much on the palate. A little more funk in the mouth would have been nice, but still enjoyable.
