This Black IPA challenges expectations, appearing like a stout but drinking like an IPA, delivering bold, hop-forward flavors without a strong roast character.

Look: Jet black with an excited light brown head that holds as a pillow before slowly receding to reveal nice lacing left behind
Aroma: Pine, grapefruit rind and flesh, gooseberries, bakers cocoa, light roast, tangerine, limes, and raspberries
Taste: Opens up with a little medley of berries that have their quick moment before pine and citrus crash in. Dark chocolate and roast go back and forth with pine and citrus with each having their chance in the limelight until it closes out with a nice bite
Mouthfeel: Full, clean, medium-high carbonation, and dry on the finish
Overall: This is some good stuff. I love this style and try any I see so went in head first and can say, this is a tasty one. A good balance between malt and hops with the malt holding its own against a strong hoppy front and never clashing either. Recommended if you dig the Black IPA/CDA style

16oz can
Pours two big fingers of brown head into my Willi. Retention is really nice and a finger of head still remains after a few minutes. Lacing is very thick. Body is pitch black. Looks awesome.
Nose is pine, gooseberries, with underlying notes of chocolate and a touch of roast. Hops are spicy but the malt gives the beer a soft impression. Smells wonderful.
Flavor shows a big hit of chocolate up front, a little roast, and then a solid dose of pine. All the flavors blend together perfectly, and unlike a lot of black IPA’s, the malt is clearly represented. Tastes great.
Carbonation is elevated, and when paired with a significant bitterness, there is a pretty serious bite here. Sweetness is very modest and only serves to cut through the bitterness. Body is medium. Overall it’s a nice mouthfeel.
Drinkability is decent.
Altogether it’s pretty well-balanced, the chocolate does a great job of smoothing things out. It gets a little astringent at times and the flavor drifts, but overall a fantastic, flavorful beer.

16oz can served in a snulip. Can is dated 01/27/25. Bought it Friday at Hop & Hound.
Pours black with a dark brown, big fluffy head, settling slowly and leaving big lumpy mounds of head. Smell is roast and horehound, coffee and bitter pine.
Taste is roast bitterness, burnt nuts, tons of pine resin and grapefruit rind, tons of burnt coffee.
Mouthfeel is light, clean, crisp. Overall, nice, a bit too much on the roasty side, but good enough to make me happy when looking for a black IPA.
