A: Had this on tap in Astoria at the Public House. Pours a cloudy reddish color, very slight head, no lacing down the glass.
S: Smell is slightly woody, also some roasted malts and earthy hop scents
T: Slight roasty malts up front followed by big time earthy piney hops. Not well balanced, needs more malt backbone in my opinion.
M: Medium bodied beer, carbonation is just fine.
D: This beer would be a little better if they made it a bigger beer, I felt like the malt was overpowered by the hoppiness. Not a bad...could be better with a few tweaks to the recipe.

Enjoyed on tap during a showing of "Shanghaied in Astoria," a kitschy little play put on by local talent.
Pours reddish-brown with a tan head that plays a vanishing act, leaving only a creamy sheen, though with some webs of lacing.
Tart, fruity smell. Cherry or raspberry with sweet caramel malts and a hint of dark chocolate. Delicious coffee and chocolate bitterness in the taste.
My viewing of the show was made twice as enjoyable through the opportunity to taste this oddity. Does it match the definition of a red ale entirely? No. But it has some damn fine flavors that were gellin' with my palate, and it's a beer that I'll definitely seek out again the next time I'm in Astoria.

A head scratching, experimental hybrid-style beer that doesn't quite gel. Though the name implies a red ale - a nebulous style in itself - this rusty, brownish beer is brewed with chocolate malts and noble hops to a taste that leans more towards brown ales or nutty variants of ESBs. It sports a black cherry fragrance with a wooden taste accented by stark-and-stern bittering and quickly reminded me of Laurelwood's Hooligan, another hybrid innovation defining the "not quite brown ale" category.
Turbid, light-bodied and low-suds, Nut Red is not nearly as ambitious as Ft. George's other beers and disappoints in its failure to meet the expectations established by the bulk of Ft. George's more inspired offerings.
