Had this on tap last August at the Fort George Brewery in Astoria, Oregon. The colour was an orange-brown with a thick white head. The aroma was rather woody and oaky with hints of malt. On the palate, there was a distinct tanginess followed by prepared mustard. The mouthfeel was rather thin. Bit of a disappointment!

A doppelbock, though more strongly bittered than traditional varieties and a bit disappointing in that the malts don't shine as is customary for the style. Furthermore, Illuminator is aged in Jim Beam bourbon barrels, which, in my view, just doesn't do anything for a doppelbock. The aroma varies from malt syrup to brown sugar to the innards of a fresh pumpkin. Color is dark cranberry-sorrel. The enthusiastic and sustained carbonation upholds a raft of thick velvety foam trailing widespread lace.

Not bad, but this alleged doppelbock strays somewhat off the beaten path with no discernable lager-like qualities and a slightly ashen finish.
