Served in tulip. Poured a semi-cloudy orange-amber color with about 3/4 inch of white head that had very good retention and lacing.
The aroma was certainly very hop-forward. Lots of citrus and pine, with some floral notes in the background. The malt aspect of the scent was very soft. The flavor profile had a bit stronger malt presence, which balanced out the bold hops very nicely. A very nice blend of flavors.
The body was very good, full and smooth, with a nice citrus hop bite on the finish. Drinkability was very good for a brew this strength, I had a couple and would have had more had the keg not kicked. Overall, an almost excellent beer. A must try if you see it. Worth the trip to Astoria if you hear about it being on tap.

Had on-tap yesterday at their brewpub in Astoria after a nice hike around Fort Stevens.
- Nice glowing amber/orange color... thin layer of foamy off-white head.. lace all about in the snifter.
- Nice citrus and floral scent... balanced with a subtle sweet malt, caramel... some pine.
- Very smooth, balanced and sweet... floral and citrus hops... a great balance.
- Medium bodied.. not very heavy, but smooth. Slightly drying, but overall very good.
- I actually liked this better than the Vortex IPA, and it is very drinkable, and would sneak up on many.

On draught at Bailey's, Bad Ju Ju is a very cloudy dark burnt orange with an of-white head that leaves nice lace.
Smell is bright hops, sweet but resinous pine and cat pee. Maltier as it warms, but also a kind of a sharpness that I could do without.
Taste is also rather hoppy, in your face really. Interesting that my server in Portland was apparently fresher then John's at the pub! There's a nice clean, biscuit malt backbone, bready, with modest bitterness, a really nice DIPA. I'm a big fan of their Vortex IPA, of which this is just an amped up version.
Mouthfeel is dry and crisp, medium bodied.
Drinkability is very good, a nice big IPA that brings the flavor without blistering the palate. Dangerous!

On tap at the brewpub.
The beer pours a mahogany copper color and is much darker then what I normally expect in a DIPA. However, the beer has very good head retention and lacing otherwise. On the nose there are some intriguing aromas of apple, wood, hoppy citrus and malt. On the palate this beer is like no NW DIPA I've ever had, and is way too malty with an insufficient hop base. It's OK, but I'm not thrilled by this beer. While not too sweet, I still think the excessive malt and the hop variety do not mix very well, and ultimately the beer is a bit heavy and tiring on the palate. The hops still dominate in this beer, but it's just not working for me.
This is a decent enough DIPA, but it's hardly anything to write home about. Given the numerous opportunites in the NW to find great DIPA's, will not order this one again.
