2021 Matryoshka was aged for one year in a blend of Buffalo Trace Bourbon and Westward Whiskey barrels. This barrel aged stout is an exercise in balance and intensity, full of bold flavors such as vanilla, anise, chocolate, coffee, and charred oak, all integrating seamlessly. The high gravity and robust mouthfeel give the beer heft and substance, while remaining smooth and deceivingly drinkable

Not sure what's going on with this one. I had two bottles, the first of which I very much enjoyed with its mild raspberry undertones. I'm now having the second bottle a few months after, and this time the taste is overwhelmed by the raspberries. I even (unfortunately) noticed chunks of what I assume to be raspberry in my glass which helps to explain the strong raspberry taste on the palate. Typically adjuncts fade over time so I think it's safe to assume this is an inconsistency between bottles. Even though I enjoyed my first, my rating more reflects the second and less enjoyable bottle of the two.

Brownish black pour complete with a big brown head that fades quickly into a faint collar. Get plenty of semi-sweet dark chocolate and raspberry in the nose, but also get cinnamon burnt earth and rubber. Taste again leads with the chocolate and raspberry, quite nice, but the roasted malt that is the finish is bland. Barrel character is microscopic and only manifests as molasses underneath it all as it warms. Feel is lighter for a RIS, barrel character is lacking, but smooth. Missed the mark here
