Released June 2010.
A special brew to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the cult film "The Goonies" (filmed in Astoria). Jack Harris of Fort George and John Dalgren of Astoria Brewing Company teamed to brew Truffle Shuffle: "made with 7 oz. of ground black truffle mushrooms, lots of specialty malts and the Goonies one-liners".

Was this re-made for this year's Festival of Dark Arts, or really a 5 year old keg?

On tap at the Belmont Station bar. I was hoping I'd find this beer on my trip to Portland, and I sure did.
Dark hue with a single finger mocha/light tan head that fades to lacing. First whiff smells of dark and roasted aromas. Lots of malt and baking chocolate things going on. Light-Medium body, not much carbonation. First sip taste like you're taking a bight out of some really dark chocolate; the kind my mom used to bake cakes with. Definitely bitter in the aftertaste. There's hints of chocolate cake swimming around the roasty flavors. It's reasonably dry. This reminds me of Stone's 12th Anniversary Beer, the one with the dark chocolate oatmeal stout, but a little sweeter. I didn't get a whole pint of this, and I'm glad I did that. Definitely a good chocolate stout but fresh it's a little harsh, a few months in the cellar might help. Good beer for a good movie.

'Goonies' fans rejoice ~ here's a beer crafted just for you! To honor the 25th Anniversary of the film's release, two Astoria brewers united to create 'Truffle Shuffle', which includes, among other things, 7 oz. of ground black truffles. Yum, I think...

12 oz. snifter at Bailey's Taproom.

A: The deepest, darkest elixir glaring back ominously from its glassy confines. Blackness capped with a 1/4" of creamy khaki bubbliness. Fades to a Rorschach blotch of film (a skull perhaps?). Lovely lace coating, broad and sagging ribbons.

S: Didn't love the aroma right away, but given some time to warm, the sweeter molasses, toffee, and latent dark fruits really begin to shine. A bit of an 'oatmeal stout' character predominates, dark cocoa and graham cracker.

T: Dark chocolate, dank earth. Sinister roast, a charcoal that's brusque and hints at smoke, even meatiness. Left on my own accord, I probably wouldn't have picked 'truffle' as the lasting flavor, but something like 'muddy' or 'terrestrial' seem spot-on as descriptors.

M: Thick, plush velvet. A serious mouthfeel that starts chewier than it ends. Medium body, aiming for a bit more. A comfortable result: mild warmth, modest coating, lasting chocolate and a bit of indistinct dirty char.

D: A fine sipper, hearty and filling. I think a snifter of this is about right...enough to linger over and ponder without too much effect, given it's 7+% muscle. Glad to have tried this novel one-timer; it'd be nice if this recipe returned in some way, shape or form.
