aged over four years in oak, and done with coconut and vanilla beans, this is a beer of the year candidate for me so far this year, insanely refined for how huge it is, fresh and rich flavors for how old it is, incredibly cohesive and complex, but also approachable because the alcohol is so well hidden, the added flavors really pop, and there is a textural smoothness that is almost unrivaled, so glad i got to drink this, its absolutely lights out. thick but not quite syrupy textured from the tap, with a creamy looking light brown head sitting on top with nice retention. the nose is barrel char, toasted coconut, deep chocolate malt, espresso crema, bitter roasted barley, elegant sexy real vanilla, light maple, brownie batter, and a hint of earthy smoke, its gloriously complex and also obviously very long aged, a wonderful decadence to this without it appearing too sweet. the flavor is incredible, stout first, added ingredients later on, layers of malt make it very deep, bitterness from the roast balances a sweeter more milk chocolate center, and the barrels keep the whole thing grounded, a downright ton of oak to this, so mature. the coconut ramps up pretty big in the second half, its incredibly natural and is highlighted well by the vanilla, so it sort of at the same time does the chocolate coconut dessert and also the tropical coconut cocktail thing, dynamic to say the least, and it never gets very sweet. the beer is melted decadent goodness, and i taste new things in it each drag i take, from boozy raisins to good coffee to raw cocoa, its amazing. the long ageing really pays off as this is smooth as silk and shows no real sign of how strong it is. i cannot say enough about this one, its truly incredible. not to be missed, unforgettably great!
