Dismal Nitch is named for the purportedly darkish, depressing cove where Lewis & Clark were stranded in 1805. But anyone who has been here knows how the water sparkles, birds skipping through streaks of sun-bleached driftwood, how the dense fog curls its fingers around each tree limb, glinting, dispersing, reforming in a complex and beautiful homogeneity. And beyond and behind all that the gentle but persistent hum of tide winds through the steel braces of the Megler Bridge. Perfect place for a dim, bright, dense, light, dark, lager.

Pours a dark brown with a tan head and some lacing. Aroma is roasted malt and slight chocolate and coffee. Taste is light and dry with a slight bitterness on the finish and a hint of sweetness in the middle. Rated 2-16-2023

Actually, the name is a good approximation of how this tastes. Not bad, but dark and forboding somehow. Pours a clear very dark brown tinged with amber, beige whipped cream foam. Sudsy and lush in the mouth. Pleasant aroma of roasted grain. Some malty sweetness to go with the burnt malt flavors. Fairly bitter aftertaste, but overall it's light bodied and mellow. Highly drinkable and plenty of flavor. From the 16 oz can purchased at Community Co-op in Bellingham. Dated 10/24/2022.

16oz can, 3 months old

Pours a finger of pillowy tan head into my Nonic. Retention is superb, after a few minutes most of the head remains, and nearly half a finger lasts to the bottom. Lacing is very thick. Body is pitch black. Looks wonderful.

Nose is roasty, savory, clean, dry, and minerally. Quality nose, though I wouldn’t mind some more depth in the form of chocolate, coffee, bread, or caramel.

Luckily there is some bread and chocolate on the flavor, in addition to a modest roast. Very well balanced, and certainly tasty.

Not very dry, there is a touch of sweetness, very balanced in that regard as well. Not particularly bitter either, a small amount in the finish. Carbonation is on the higher side. Light bodied. Not picking up much of a mineral character, actually very smooth on the palate, almost creamy once the carbonation settles a bit. Overall a very nice mouthfeel.

Drinkability is great.

Overall just a fantastic beer. Balanced, smooth, and flavorful.

Look: Super dark brown when poured and black in the glass and my pour kicked off a lofty beige head that refuses to settle although finally relents in pockets and leaving fantastic lacing behind
Aroma: Toasted bread crust, freshly baled brown bread, light roast notes, earthiness, and some chocolate
Taste: Roast and bread come on strong on the initial sip and begin to develop, immediately followed by a back and forth between chocolate and earthy notes that ends with both shining. Layers of bready malt continues until roast, chocolate, and earthiness return for the close
Mouthfeel: Light but full, very clean throughout, medium-high carbonation, and clean and crisp on the finish
Overall: This is a delicious Schwarz. My main sucker style and made by one of the top five brewers in the state in my opinion made this an easy score and as expected, it’s awesome. Nice malt depth with the right amount of chocolate, roast, and earthiness all in balance and with a clean and crisp feel help secure this offering’s place in the winner’s circle. Recommended

Dark pour, light head, no aroma to speak of. First taste is dry, hoppy and well flavored. Body is very lager-like. If you closed your eyes, you'd expect to see a light amber beer in the glass. Just a bit of toasted bread in the background. You could take this beer year-round. Enjoyable.

neat interpretation of the style, stoke to have found this on draft. its way more bitter and dark and robust than just about all of these, certainly the ones actually made in europe, and in many ways more like a robust porter, or even baltic porter i guess with the lager yeast, tons of roasty dark grain to this, almost overly intense, but really good, still somehow balanced, and at that same high quality level as all of the fort george stuff. obsidian in the glass, high shine and a frothy tan head two inches tall sitting on it, high contrast, nice luster. the smell is roasty and concentrated, massively bitter without being sweet in the least, nuances of tree bark, hazelnuts, and charcoal, some light yeast character here too, less sweet and way deeper than more classic examples of the style, and the flavor is similar, definite stout or porter vibes to this, and it stays with me long on the tongue after each pull. there is still a sort of uplifting feel to this even though its a little fuller than many, and i think part of it still being fairly easy down is how dry it is, the carbonation is also pretty high which helps, dark cocoa, bitter espresso beans, and wet earth through the finish. definitely a cold weather drinker, unique for the style, incorporates of lot of elements and speaks in a pretty loud voice. maybe not an all nighter, but fun and yummy for a pint or two or three...

L: Dark, dark brown body, thick pillowy head.
S: Sweet, a bit nutty. Roasty caramel malts, pretzel, chocolate, a touch of vanilla, even a bit of smoke.
T: Follows the nose. Roasty malts followed by a dash of hops and a return to the malt on the finish. Bread crust, caramel, pretzels, bitter chocolate, hints of nuts and cola.
F: Medium bodied, dry finish.
O: Delicious. The toasted pretzel is really nice, and the dry finish is on point. Really stellar.
