picked up at Cheap Charlie's in Gresham, OR; collab w/ Van Henion Brewing; 'west coast black pilsner'
16oz can poured into Monkless chalice
p- black w/ a 1f tan head; looks nice
n- soft-med; some citrusy and floral notes combine with toasted malt and nuttiness; not bad at all; light-med sweetness
t- wow- this is good; much like a black ipa; bright, somewhat juicy citrusy and floral notes over a nicely-roasted malt body; green hops in there too
mf- med to med-full bodied; lightl creaminess; med to med-high carb
o- a solid, tasty offering, imo- surprised to see the relatively low ratings for this here; would happily have again!

Description on can says "Black West Coast Pilsner" (not Czech Dark Lager). Very dark color. Fairly hoppy aroma, piney, green. Flavor is interesting-- really distinct toasted / smoky notes. Very prominent hoppy flavor.. not too overwhelming... just a lot more than I would expect for a pilsner. Ends bitter and astringent. Bitter, smoky aftertaste. Decent body. Basically smoked grains and hops. Not my favorite, probably won't purchase again.
Edited: really bad once it wasn't cold anymore. Yuck!

16oz can
Pours nearly two fingers of fluffy brown head into my Kolsch glass. Retention is average and the head fades within a few minutes. Lacing is pretty good. Body is pitch black. Looks nice.
Nose has a lot going on - dry roast, bitter, chocolate, citrus, and some pine. Not sure these go well together, but at least it’s a big aroma.
Yeah the chocolate and roast are fighting for attention with the citrus hop profile. This is a fun thought, but these flavors just don’t go well together. I’m pretty much never going to want fruity hops in a dark beer; no reason not to just load this with dank, piney hops. All things considered it’s still fine.
Carbonation is medium. Has a little body to it. Bitterness is medium-high. Has a small fruity sweetness. There is an astringent tinge to this between the bitterness, citrus, sugar, and maybe even a little alcohol at 6.5% It’s trying to be a little sweet and that just doesn’t work - almost reminds me of chocolate oranges. Overall the mouthfeel is absolutely all over the place, which is kinda true for the entire beer.
Drinkability is sub-par - the citrus, bitterness, and overall astringency are not always easy to palate.
Overall this is still loaded with flavor, it just could have gone a lot further with a better blend of flavors.
