There are many varieties of waves on the North Coast: spilling waves, plunging waves, waves of industry, waves of tourists, waves of corgis, and The Garden of Surging Waves, a city park in the center of downtown Astoria that was dedicated by the city as a bicentennial gift honoring the vital and lasting impact of Chinese American heritage in Astoria. At the Garden of Surging Waves, you’ll find a tranquil square full of artwork, historical markers, and a timeline of important events in our region. In a can of Surging Waves Lager, you’ll find a perfectly crisp, dry, classic rice lager.

Had at Vancouver Brewfest last weekend. Pours a light golden color with a small white head. The aroma is bready and grain malt and not much hops though, it comes through in the taste. Very light body and mouthfeel. Rated 7-31-2023

16oz can from Hops & Bottles. Clear, pale golden, thin foamy white head. Sweet, grainy aroma. Taste is grainy, bready, sweet with a mild peppery bite at the finish. Smooth, tasty.

L: Clear straw body, one finger head.
S: Cracker malt, bread dough, sweet grassy hops, a hint of butter.
T: The hops are on the front end, coming as a quick burst flowers and lemon notes. The body and the finish are all malt. Cracker, bread dough, wheat, some toasty notes, the whole gang.
F: Crisp at first, with a bit of a slow finish. Moderate carbonation.
O: Nothing to complain about. Enjoyable level of complexity for a lager and crisp enough to be refreshing.

very nice take on the style, not quite as light to drink on as some of these, but still light on flavor, just takes on a little more textural robustness from the rice, nothing wrong with that, and its still super dry. if this is jasmine rice, its not as floral to me as some of these are, and there is a light starchy thing to it which beefs it up a little, i dont mind in the context of it still feeling like winter outside and needing something crisp but not necessarily fully minimal, right on for this time of year in this part of the world. yellow and clear in the glass, two inches of rising white head cap it off, frisky carbonation, looks just right. nose is somewhat understated, european type hop thing, faint hay and straw to it, lightly bitter as well, but more about the pale grain and the lager yeast, which seems patiently deployed and expert overall. the flavor is cool because the rice is earthy and central without some of its usual features, it almost has a lightly toasted aspect about it, which is interrupted only at the swallow by the bitter grassy hops and the faint lemon note they carry, and by the drying lager yeast which is subtle on its own but is seemingly in a rush to conclude this thing, which makes it refreshing enough, i think we all look for that in this style, and this still more or less scratches that itch. perhaps a tad less delicate than the best of them, but that feels on purpose, everything at fort george is. delicious shoulder season brew, nice with their delicious pizza in here!
