Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing opaque black in the glass with a fine, one finger khaki head with great retention and solid lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, whiskey, dried plums, dates, raisins and dry caramel.
Taste is dark toasted malt, dry caramel, whisky, raisins, well dried plums, a hint of oaky vanilla, some cocoa and touch of rye tartness in the finish. Medium bodied with fine moderate creaminess and silky mouth feel. The aroma and taste are a classic American strong ale combination of English style barleywine and stout. Rich flavor leans strongly to the barleywine side, which is great because Fremont's barleywines are some the best around. The stout (and if I read the description right, from Fort George) is rich and compliments the barleywine flavors quite well. Light, but fine barrel notes and lost of whiskey with a little rye. I was saving this for a special night, but I'm also trying to not hang onto stuff in my cellar too long. This has held up excellently to two years and certainly could have been aged longer. Looks, aroma, flavor and feel are all top notch. This is a superb blended strong ale and stands with some of the finest classic ones. I think I like it better than most Fremont blended ones, and that's a high bar. Excellent collaboration.

550ml bottle poured into a snifter
A- pours dark brown color with a one-finger foamy light khaki head that reduces to a thin creamy film floating on top
S- aroma opens with charred malt and chocolate, followed by black strap molasses, caramel, leather, brownie batter, figs and anise. As it warms, notes of oaky bourbon emerge, giving a hint of vanilla and spicy barrel juice
T- sweet malty chocolate and charred malt up front give notes of brownie batter & black licorice. Mid-palate brings out the barleywine, adding caramel, toffee, figs & raisins. The barrel influence follows, adding wet oak and peppery barrel juice that enhance the caramel and adds some vanilla cream undertones. The finish gives more caramel and bold barrel juice, with a linger of sweet caramel and chocolate
M- medium body with moderate carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel that turns slightly creamy into a warming finish

Taster at Tapped. Dark brown pour, ring of beige bubbles. Sweet malty aroma, chocolate. Taste is very, very sweet, chocolate, raisins, prunes and some latent heat, but not as much as you would think.

8oz pour at Chalice Brewing, in Coeur d'Alene, ID.
Served in an 8oz snifter, this was the color of Jim Jordan's heart, with a dark khaki colored head. Surprising amount of lace for such a strong beer.
Not surprisingly, this one is fairly boozy in the nose. Strong bourbon nose, along with a bit of dark fruit aroma. A little bit of fudgy sweetness is present as well, but it's pretty low in the mix compared to the bourbon.
Taste is pretty much like the aroma. The various bourbon barrels used ensure that bourbon is the dominant flavor. Oddly, I don't get as much oakiness as I expected to. There's also a date-like dark fruitiness. I did not get much in the way of alcohol heat. That might be a by-product of the fairly small serving size, though. Perhaps sipping on a 22oz bottle of this for a while as it fully warms up to room temperature would yield a different experience.
Decadently creamy mouth feel.
Really damn good beer. 8oz might be the perfect serving size, though I'd welcome a 12oz bottle for take-home purposes. I'd definitely hit this again.
