IMPERIAL SPICED PUMPKIN STOUT

A roasty, toasty spiced pumpkin stout with a bite.

There is nothing like the silence and loneliness of night to bring dark shadows over the brightest mind. There is nothing like Joaquin Phoenix to transform a blurry home video into a living nightmare. And there is nothing like a few weeks in the write tank at Fort George to turn a dark and spicy pumpkin beer into a majestic, imperial beast of a stout.

It’s an Imperial Pumpkin Stout with 150 pounds of roasted pumpkin.

Hops: Columbus

Malts: Rahr 2 Row, Great Western Munich, Grain Millers Flaked Oats, C40, DRC, Baird’s Roasted Barley, Crisp Pale Chocolate

Other: Roasted Pumpkin, Brown Sugar, Nutmeg, Cinnamon, Ginger, Clove

16oz can

Pours over a finger of brown head into my snifter. Retention is average. Lacing is ok. Body is pitch black. Looks fine.

Nose is sweet with underlying pumpkin. The spices all blend together into one, but smooth cinnamon and sharp ginger pop out briefly. Smells good, almost has a creaminess to it.

Flavor is modest, ginger hits briefly along with clove and nutmeg. Finishes with pumpkin, cinnamon, and roast. Subtle, but I guess all the food groups are represented. Honestly kinda nice that the roast has this still tasting like beer.

Mouthfeel comes in pretty hot at first, smooths out a bit but still keeps a astringent / sour bite into the finish. Carbonation is light. Body is medium. Not insanely sweet, but it is slightly cloying. Bitterness is modest. Overall the mouthfeel is ok, a little sharp for me.

Drinkability is subpar between the astringency and cloying feel.

It’s pretty good, not really my kinda beer but I’m not sure what I expected.
