Pre-Prohibition Style Lager
A very pale, ultra-drinkable, moderately hopped lager with a grainy-sweet corn flavor and smooth finish. Brewer Augie has this to say about Old Sport: “It’s a cereal mash with 150 pounds of corn grits. We boiled the grits in the kettle to gelatinize the starches, making them available for enzymes in the mash to break them down further. After this process, the cereal mash went back to the lauter tun with 6-row malt on top. 6-row malt is similar to the 2 row malt we use in all our other beers but with some extra enzymes to make up for the lack of enzymes in the corn grits. The enzymes are what break down the starches into fermentable sugars which turn into alcohol. From this point it’s more like a normal brewing process. Cereal mashes are cool and you don't see many craft brewers doing these styles as they are very labor intensive.”
Fort George’s original 8.5 barrel brewhouse has been turning out experimental, rule-breaking beers in small batches since we opened in 2007. The sky (and our brewers’ sense of adventure) is the limit and whatever it is - it could be your next favorite beer.
Hops: Saaz
Malts: Rahr Standard 6-Row, Corn Grits, Acidulated
