Matryoshka begins with a decadent imperial stout aged for one year in whiskey and bourbon barrels. During this twelve month period of confinement, the powerful flavor of the barrel tempers the dessert-like sweetness of the base beer to produce a rich, smooth, flavorful stout that is neither too thick, nor too thin.
Matryoshka is perfectly, lovingly crafted to fulfill our finest stout dreams. Smaller and smaller variations will continue to emerge from the mother batch, conditioned on complementary ingredients, creating a family of variants to be released in February 2026.
2026 Matryoshka is a blend of Basil Hayden Whiskey Barrels, Bernheim Wheated Whiskey Barrels, Freeland Bourbon Pinot Noir Conditioned Barrels, Russell’s Reserve Whiskey Barrels, Westland Whiskey Barrels and Westward Whiskey Barrels conditioned for 12 to 48 months.

From Good Times Oakland, 500 ml waxed bottle.
Pours black with close to a finger of tan foam. Retention and esp, lacing, are excellent.
The smell is cocoa/chocolate, barrel aromas, roasted malt, overall divinely sweet.
The taste is thick dose of chocolate, roasted malt, barrel is coming through nicely, wood, and, surprisingly, no burn from the ample alcohol.
Fullish body that is silky smooth, this is a winner in my book for yes, I would drink this again. After awhile, the body does thin out a bit but that's a minor quibble.
