Very dark brown with a surprising beige head that foams up nicely. Quite sudsy in the Duvel tulip and in the mouth. Rich and malty with more substance than expected from the moderate alcohol content. Interesting aroma of roasted grain with a whiff of flowers and cedar.

There's a nice touch of the "meaty" flavor you usually only encounter in a Saison or Biere de Mars. Plenty of warm roasted malt pushes back against the bitter hops. Quite bitter finish. So dark flavored, but there's a hint of mango and pineapple, even cocoanut.

One of the better examples of a Black IPA. Makes you want to keep sipping. From the 16 oz can purchased at the Bellingham Food Co-op.

Pours like a root beer: deeep brown bordering on black that gets chalky at the edges when held up to light and a slight rich reddish hue. Creamy deep tan head that sticks around, leaving tantalizing reminders along the glass of the fun we're having.

Really enticing smell. Roasty without being too malty, sweet caramel and floral pine and citrus hops blend together really nicely to make for a smell I can't wait to translate to taste.

It starts off with an ashy coffee characteristic that quickly gives way to a brief surge of hops, mainly citrus but with some tropical fruit as well. It seems blunted somewhat, and I'm not just talking about a mild tobacco quality either... The roast turns more char, the sweet becomes more just... heavy, and the bright hops move more midpalate. Heavier than expected, but I like it here. This is an interesting take on the CDA. I can get behind it. Whereas a lot of times they can be sharp and bright, this one is more wintery, more muddied. Dunno if that would happen after just three months? I'd definitely have another one.

Picked up a growler from total wine. Poured into tulip glass, pours a pitch black with a lighter tan head. Smell is very much like a west coast ipa, but there's sometbing more, it's not as sweet as you would expect, some garlic notes to it. Taste is decent, it's not the most flavorful black ipa but it's good. The aftertaste isn't the best, there's a little bite almost to it. Mouthfeel is pretty much full bodied. Overall it's a decent black ipa for the handful out there, I would reccomend it. Excellent lacing as well.

Found this tonight for a pretty price $3/can at Brewforia Meridian... Poured into my HotD goblet produces a thin light brown head atop a brew that is pretty much black... spotty lacing.

Nose is piney/pithy citrus hoppiness with a decent punch of garlic hops... almost no malt battles out from the massive hop profile.

Flavor is a little better with some lite roast/cocoa on the finish that is complimented by a modest background malt sweetness... still the hop flavors/aromas (not necessarily the hop bitterness) are the first violins.

For just a 6.2% beer, this has a surprisingly good body.. decent carbonation..

I like this one, but there is just enough of the garlic/onion hoppiness to make me not like it "as much"... still though.. this is very well done.

16oz can bought from "lifesource" in Salem. $2.59 Pours a pretty black black! body with a small yet persistent frothy tan head. Dank piney, resiny hop aromas..this one smells way more on the hoppy side of the CDA universe! Paradoxically the flavour is way more balanced with the roasted malt aspect very much to the fore..balances the hops perfectly. Perfect mouth feel on this one even with all the clashing of flavours it becomes balanced and smooth yet always something to intrigue the taste buds. A nice the palate.
