one of the better domestic Altbiers you may come across - most of the flavors and nuances are there - just lacking on visual clarity (it was quite hazy), nothing a good, clean fermentation and lagering wouldn't fix - that said, if it was simply bright, the color and foam would be spot on

basically, its a rust-tinged dark amber (it was poured to the top, but did lace cleanly down the glass), noticeably cloudy.... aromas of moderately caramelized bread crust, equal amount mellow Brazil nut, faint herbal hop on the fringes... the degree of accuracy in flavor is apparent immediately, though the malt isn't as well-rounded in definition - it's damn close, very well-balanced overall flavors, just lacking some refinement/concentration, hop character assertive (detectable) enough - very clean altogether with malt, perhaps some mild sediment influence.... as I said, it drinks fairly clean but it has a pleasant roundness coming through up the middle, hardly viscous but providing well, almost medium body, carbonation on the mellow side... yeah, this an their Kolsch, they did a fine job on

 

 

Appearance: Cloudy brownish (almost black). Brownish tan head with good lacing.

Smell: Aroma of chocolate malts and toasty bread. It seemed to have a hint of NW hops which is not style specific although the menu says they used imported Spalt hops.

Taste: A balance of sweet malts and dark malts. A solid bitternesss component.

Mouthfeel: Good carbonation. Full bodied with a tr tart dryness.

Drinkability: A pleasant surprise. I tried the Altbier after having the Pale Ale. I am not an expert on Alts but this was a nice balance of dark malts with hop bitterness.

This special German-style aleis still made faithfully in Dusseldorf, hust down the road from Cologne. Our interpretationis light brown in color and cleanly malty, wth a crisp hoppy bitterness in the finish.
