woody and funky long aged flanders red type here done for their anniversary and enjoyed on at at the brewery over the weekend. really neat release here, different than most for a number of reasons. its light in abv which is cool and somewhat unexpected, brick red in color and very frothy cream headed for the style, just light tan, lasting and thick, sometimes sours and really mature beers dont hold much head, but thats not the case here this is lovely. the aroma is wood forward, bit tannins, nuttiness, and vanilla character from it, some red wine too perhaps but unlike many flanders types this stops short of being vinegar sour and acetic. deep fruity complexity here from port wine to raisin to black cherry, fig, date, and apricot fruit leather, so dynamic, lots of bretty funk too, not overly sour it doesnt seem. the flavor is similarly wood forward, like liquid lumber, how long was this in barrels?! cherry and every raspberry character to this, leather, toasted walnut, brown sugar, its quite autumnal to me, and its rich without being particularly sweet, rare for a sour. love the malt complexity, the mature wooden funk, and the overall lightness this somehow still posses, nice carbonation helping with that. really good stuff here, among the best american made takes on the style i can recall ever drinking in fact. it always amazes me how many things these guys do so well! definitely worth seeking out for fans of the style.
