12oz can poured into deep woods stemless glass. No canned on date. Vintage 2018.
Appearance: black bodied beer with thick dark brown head. Decent staying power. Eventually drops down to thick ring around the outside area of the glass. No lacing.
Smell: Rum boozy with a hint of vanilla forward spirits. chocolate stout notes. Smelling some macadamia nuts as well. Oak barrels and char.
Taste: Semi sweet dark chocolate probably the strongest chocolate flavor that I have experienced in the BA dark secret variants to date. Deep dry oak notes. The vanilla seems to blend in with the Rum flavors in the middle with a charred barrel flavor. A stronger vanilla note builds up in the finish, but it's still a lighter tasting vanilla note that lingers long after each sip. Also getting a hint of chocolate, tobacco, & barrel char to round out the finish. This beer really opened up nicely as it warmed up. The body thinned out substantially and the texture was more creamy. The booze character really mellowed out and intense dark chocolates melded into vanilla and milk chocolates; also started to taste hints of coconut.
Mouthfeel: on the thicker end of medium bodied stout. Low and adequate carbonation levels for the style. This one is a has a little bit more booze than most BA dark secret variants as well. Not overly distracting, but definitely more noticeable than usual. It's probably the just the rum barrel aging as this tends to be a slightly boozier spirit than bourbon, brandy, or wine barrels in my experience with barrel aged high ABV beers.
Overall: Not too much to say here besides these dark secret variants are really really enjoyable. I am just reiterating what I have said about the other 2018 variants that I have been working through recently. I don't usually get overly excited about rum barrel aged beers, but this one is well done. I did not love this beer out of the fridge, but it really transformed into something really delicious once it hits the right temperature. Since the base stout being so dark chocolate forward the vanilla and rum are great flavors to pair with this barrel aged stout series by Brickstone. This might be my favorite variant of 2018; tried the Heaven Hill and Blis barrel variants
