12oz can poured into stemless deep woods glass.
Appearance: Dark black body with thick and creamy dark brown head. This might be the darkest colored head I have ever seen. Head pours at least 3 fingers tall with heavy pour into the beer glass. The head is substantial has a lot of staying power.
Smell: milk chocolate and dark chocolate medley. Toasty oak barrel notes all day. Cinnamon? Spicy aroma maybe the bourbon? Hard to put my finger on it.
Taste: Leading with mellow bourbon; light and dry dark chocolate note is the base stout's primary flavor. Hints of cinnamon, leather, and tobacco. Distinct toasty, deep, dry oak permeates throughout the stout without being the dominate flavor; it just seems to wander in and out as it pleases. Light meaty smoke. Finish is a general umami richness and spicy note almost like nutmeg / allspice; these flavors are fairly mellow and it do not linger for too long.
Mouthfeel: No detectable abv in this stout. Medium-full bodied stout. low yet adequate carbonation. thick, creamy and smooth. All the oak notes makes this beer a little dry overall.
Overall: I think my preference of the 2021 BA Dark Secret releases lies with the Blanton's barrel. I find the Woodford Double oak to be just what it advertises, it's an oak bomb. Nothing wrong with that and I actually like it uniqueness. Not sure that I have tried many single barrel Woodford Double oak aged stouts yet, this might be my first. It just does not pull that rich & smooth in your face bourbon flavor (without being overly boozy) that the Blanton's barrel seems to pull off which is where my barrel aged stout tastes/preferences tend to be most times.
