I stopped by König Von Flandern twice while in Augsburg, on both 01OCT and 02OCT09. Seeing their Doppelbock on the menu, their other biers got little notice from me. I like DBs!! They serve this in 0.3l glasses for 2.70EU. But visit Monday through Friday between 4PM and 6PM and you can get a glass for 1.70EU. Giddy up!!
Served in a tall, slender glass, Alligator (AHH-lee-GAH-tor, as they say) was a deep, dark mahogany. The bier was clear, with some garnet glistening at the edges. Head was creamy and beige, about 1", and lasting well with good stick. Has a mild malty nose, with sweet caramel and toffee. The body is medium, and the feel is quite smooth and velvety, though I'd love to see it thicker.
It has good sweetness, which coats the tongue and palate. Caramel is here again in solid fashion, and there is a bit of bitterness in the finish, which also displays a little florality. A pleasurable Doppelbock, something better than most average offerings. I enjoyed 6 glasses over the course of two visits, going well with their Käsespätzle. Prosit!!

Meiner meinung nach brauen Hausbrauereien nicht immer das beste Bier in Deutschland. Sie schmecken mir immer ein bißchen unvollkommen. Aber dieses mal
Alligator Doppelbock aus Augsburg The little brewpub in the heart of the historical downtown area of Augsburg(45 min. by train outside of München) serves up good Bier at a great price. I was fortunate enough to coincidentally stop by during their Happy Hour. Between 4-6pm .3 Liter Biers are 1!!! This includes their year round Doppelbock! Make sure to try the Treberbrot(spentgrain bread). They will put a basket on the table for you. Since I was in the right place at the right time. My second Bier was the doppelbock known as Alligator
This Bier is brewed up with a O.G. of 19%!!! It pours up a very deep brown caramel color with light brown hints around the sides of the glass. The nose features a nice balance of roasted malts and candy-like crystallized sugars. The Bier is upfront sweet with a slight bitterness on the end. Its taste of dried fruits including raisins and dates. The sweet malty flavor is very present but never overpowering. The Bier is sweet and very strong at 7.2% however very smooth and highly drinkable. The Bier finishes smooth and dry with a nice roasted malt bitterness on the end. Hints of sulfur are found and yeast flavors are crisp and nice. Very nice for a brewpub!!!!
Zum Wohl!!!
