Poured stout black with a very short lived light brown head.
Aroma was lost on my Covid damaged nose.
The taste was a bit of a surprise; I had been expecting a bourbon or similar type of barrel for the aging process, but they used red wine it seems. So if you are a fan of red-wine barrel aged stouts, you may like this one a lot. I'm not so much as it's usually too much tannin flavor for me.
The feel was a touch on the thin side, curious for a BA stout.
OA, I was very happy to have tried it and would certainly drink it again but will not be seeking it out.

Bottled, 18 OCT 18
Pours a tan fizzy bubbly almost 1 finger head with med retention, a bit of lacing, decent legs, very dark basically black color
Nose is infected, souring funk with black malts, lots of fruity aromas with that, roast, dark chocolate, yeast
Taste brings a lot of fruit up front, fruity esters from the souring funk, not too crazy funk but definite infection, some whiskey and vanilla oak, a bit yeasty, some roast and dark chocolate
Mouth is med bod, a little syrupy like, med to a bit higher foamy carb, a little slick
Overall sad, this seems like it could have been good but just infection, and this was quite expensive

A: The beer is nearly jet black in color. It poured with a half finger high light beige head.
S: Light aromas of red wine are present in the nose.
T: The taste is rather fruity and has flavors of cherries along with notes of red wine and hints of dark fruits.
M: It feels nearly medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is quite fruity compared to other beers in the style but does a very good job at masking the alcohol from the taste.

L: Poured from a bottle to a goblet. Had a dark brown color and a thick, opaque consistency. There was a half inch of foamy, tan-colored, fairly long-lasting head. Sparse lacing.
S: An overly subtle aroma of berries, stone fruit, dark fruit, a vinous quality, chocolate, and yeast.
T: Tasted of a moderate amount of the yeast (present throughout, but subtle), some cherry notes (kind of fleeting), a bit of dark chocolate (could've used more), a fair amount of dark fruit (plums), some blackberries, and a little of the vinous quality. This is one of those flavors that's too thin and watery to work. None of the flavors really stand out.
F: A decent amount of carbonation with a smooth, dry finish. Medium-bodied.
O: Imperial Donkey is a beer with potential, but poor execution.
