Perhaps I should have listed this as a Chili beer instead of an American Stout, but I didn't realize Chili Beer was a BA style. This was formerly brewed by Shooting Creek Farm Brewery in Floyd County, Virginia, but they are now out of business. Blue Mountain has picked up this recipe (apparently kicking up the ABV) as well as the recipes for Rebel and Buffalo Brown ales, also of Shooting Creek..
Pitch black with a 1 1/2 finger head that dissipates rapidly leaving only a bit of lacing.
Sweet chocolate and a bit fruity at first, followed by bitter hot pepper on the aroma.
Sweet dark malt upfront, then chocolate with some occasional caramel. All of which soon are nearly overpowered by the habanero pepper. The heat is definitely "in your face" but doesn't seem to have the cumulative effect of my Jamaican Jerk sauce., which keeps getting hotter and hotter.
Medium full in body. Seems to have decent carbonation, but it's hard to tell with the burn of the peppers. Their heat is what "makes" this beer.
Use by date says 04 2015 and apparently it's past it's prime, but it's hard to tell. This is better than any other chili beer I've tried. The habanero, while dominant, still allows the stout to show through, and while stouts are typically winter brews, chilis are very appropriate in the heat of summer, making this an all season brew in my opinion.
