An American Imperial Red. SanTan’s rendition of the style involves a big blast Nelson-Sauvin hops, named for its county of origin’s famously popular Sauvignon Blanc grapes grown in Marlborough, New Zealand. The Nelson-Sauvin hops give an unmistakable aroma of apricots and a slight taste of fresh peaches. This full forward hop character is balanced with a solid caramel malt flavor. Hints of roast and espresso linger with the staying flavor of the fruity hop.

Picked up a 32 oz crowler on 4-13-19 from the SanTan Uptown Phoenix locale for $13.25.
Beer pour a reddish brown with a nice off white head that is leaving lacing behind.
Nose is caramel malt toastiness along with tropical and stone fruits.
Taste starts with a caramel malt toastiness that intermingles with grapefruit, pine, peach, and apricot. Finish is a moderate touch of grapefruit rind.
Mouthfeel is light bodied and refreshing for a bigger beer (8.3 abv).
Overall a very enjoyable red hoppy ale, a nice change up, one of my favorite styles!

Sampled on tap at SanTan Brewing; March 2011
The first thing I notice is that there is a ton of tropical fruit character (guava, mango and others) plus a tropical floral character to the nose of this beer. The beer is a clear, dark red color that is topped by a amber tinged, tan colored head. Aromatic notes of toasted malt and caramel play a subtle role here in the nose; this is more because the hops are so expressive than that there is not ample malt in this beer. The hops also provide notes of black pepper, green peppercorns, a hint of green onions, and a really prickly smelling note somehow.
My first sip sees me noticing a spicy, green hop character that mixes with ample notes of garlic chives and a big bitterness that can be rough and raw at times. The malt plays a supporting role here, though an important one; it provides a big, somewhat thick, chewy body, an ample caramelized malt backbone and, as it warms, a slight touch of sweet tea like flavors. The finish has some toasty malt character, biscuit maltiness and even dry cracker like grain character that lingers on the tongue after each sip.
The hop character is a really interesting direction for the Nelson Sauvin variety; it is really spicy and chive like. My enjoyment of this beer is definitely boosted due to this beer having a single hop focus; I am really enjoying my glass of this beer, but I get the feeling that the chive character would get on my nerves after a bit.

This is one of the 5 imperial reds done by some of the Arizona brewers to blend into Voltron. I tried 4 of them as well as Voltron and this was by far the best.
Sampled 3/4/2011 at the brewpub.
Pours bright red, clear, tall white head, decent retention, and leaves a nice lace on the glass.
Aroma is quite hoppy and malty. Lots of pine and generic hoppy resinous aromas come out of the glass along with caramel and possibly some grapefruit.
Flavor is pretty complex. Pine, sugar, chocolate, caramel, cherry, and bitterness all vie for dominance. Some booze in the back ground.
Medium bodied and quite enjoyable, for an amber.
