A: Fermented with grapefruit. Bready textured with off white color, the head surface was soapy and aerated, standing at one and one half inch with a strong retention rate. A strong and quick rush of macro-effervesce within a pale, watered orange colored body that had a slight milky haze. Lacing was weak and minimal.

S: Freshly cut grapefruit, juicy and pulpy, with some tart orange peel. Wet green hops, pine and citrusy notes. The awareness factor was solid and fresh, mostly from the fermented grapefruit which dominated, but also limited the range.

T: Tart orange flavor, the grapefruit again shines, with some dry, powdery hops of pine and citrus. Mid-bittering range hints of fresh greenery and some slight lime and moments of green pear.

M: Smooth, dry and lightly doughy. Light carbonation.

O: Overall an enjoyable drinking ipa, smooth, wet, flowery hops and fermented grapefruit.

(16 oz can, canned: 021723; purchased single off shelf at Total Wine a few days ago... poured into my Belhaven pub pint)

L: not nearly as hazy (murky) as true NEIPA, more of an unfiltered lager clarity to its yellow-amber colored liquid; lots of inflated foam on the pour, necessitating multiple top-ups, but collapsing quick, leaving only a spitty cap

S: white grapefruit and lemon rinds, background hint of caramel cookie... more orange flesh emerges after the head settles... good intensity though; "juicy" for days

T: grapefruit and bitter orange juice; only the finish sports any hoppy character, and it merely accentuates (in a brief swell) the leading fruit flavors... aftertaste is like carbonated juice with a decent balance of malty malt in the background... tasty, but just juice and malt with a static, obscured presence of fruity hops; hint of mango creeps in halfway through

F: somewhat plush, residually resinous in a way... the alcohol seems to leave the palate alight, that enhanced by the stealth, pithy bitterness, which leaves a bitey tail in the aft... marginally nectary texture, but with little roundness or drag... near flat, but easy drinking

O: a buddy of mine recommended this awhile back, but I must not have remembered what he told me it was about... not so much an IPA (let alone a Hazy) as it is a shandy of sorts... it's flavorful to a degree, but not what I would want in the rare instance of me desiring to drink a NEIPA; I've had relatively too many good ones (2159)

Fegley's Brew Works "Squishy Kitty"
16 fl. oz. can, "CANNED: 021723 09:20AM" and sampled on 071623
$4.49 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: A hazy golden-orange body is capped by a short head of white foam. In the nose I'm getting sweetish malt, bright orange, and a touch of grapefruit. The flavor follows but with stronger orange and grapefruit, and a bit of sweet red berry. There's not a lot of bitterness and it's definitely on the sweet side. That woould be fine if there was more malt to it but as it is it comes across a little like a low-carbed radler. You wouldn't confuse it for a soda because there is some malt there but it does have a soda-pop side to it. With that said it's light-medium in body with a soft carbonation that leaves it smooth. Unfortunately there's not really enough carbonation to keep the head a live and it dropped rather quickly leaving little in the way of lacing behind. I love the bright citrus character, and I think the sweetness works well with that, but at the same time I think it's a little too sweet to have more than one.

16oz can purchased from the fridge as a single for $3.49. Canned on 3/8/21, so this is exactly six weeks old.

Look: Has just a slight haze to it. Pretty pale for an IPA, it has a yellowish-golden appearance with hints of orange/amber. Lots of tiny effervescent bubbles rise to the surface. The head disappeared pretty quickly. Since this is fermented with grapefruit juice, there must be some acidity and that typically kills the head.

Smell: Definitely smells like grapefruit pulp, grapefruit zest, Cointreau, and candied orange peel. Aroma is a bit floral and grassy too. Not much else on the nose. Simple and a bit subdued. Smells nice and inviting!

Taste: Tasty. This is what I would want and expect an IPA brewed with grapefruit juice to taste like. At 7.2% ABV, it comes in a bit small for its size but there also may be some settling in the can as the flavor seems to be deeping towards the bottom of the can. This is defintely juicy and it has a pleasant acidity, which is nice because it is an IPA brewed with grapefruit juice. My criticism of this beer that it's hard to tell what kind of hops they used (citra, maybe azzaca, what else?...nope, I was wrong...see the note below) because the grapefruit juice really takes over. There is a moderately bitter finish that doesn't linger too long. I also am very surprised that this contains lactose and I'm kind of annoyed that it doesn't say anything about that on the can.

Feel: Nicely carbonated. This is light to medium bodied. The co-fermentation with grapefruit juice gives it a slightly slick and oily mouthfeel that makes it interesting.

Overall: This is a tasty beer and I like it. It has a good grapefruit flavor along with a nice acidity. However, in my opinion I would only consider this to be borderline in the NEIPA category. It's certainly not a West Coast IPA either, so I guess that NEIPA is the "better answer." I would say that perhaps it fits better into the category of an American Pale Ale than an IPA, but then the problem is that its ABV is too high to be a Pale Ale. So back to NEIPA it is. I can't help but compare this beer to another beer that this kind of reminds me of, but falls short in comparison, and that beer packs huge grapefruit aroma and flavor and has zero grapefruit in it and it is lower in ABV. Basically, it's very hard to say how important the addition of grapefruit is to this brew. It could be essential or it could be minimal. To me, it seems that it is essential and this beer would not be anything special without it. But I could be totally wrong, just like I was with my guess on the types of hops in this beer and being totally thrown for a loop that it has milk sugar.

From the website: Dry-hopped with Mandarina Bavaria, Amarillo, and Mosaic, and fermented with grapefruit and milk sugar.
Our brewer Christopher Bowen has a pet cat at his home brewery, apparently to keep the grains safe from other critters and loyal companionship. Laying around watching beer being made for years now has made him pretty "squishy". Our latest New England style IPA won't be around long enough for you to worry about that.

Was expecting better, less than average NEIPA for me. Devoid of juiciness.
