Cask at KnB Wine Cellar in San Diego, CA. March, 2013.
Pours a dark chocolate brown, almost black color with mahogany edges and half finger off-white head that immediately disappears. No lacing.
Smells like a beer version of chocolate covered raspberries. Strong dry oak/toothpick presence but I'm not picking up much of the spirit. Barrel notes along silky chocolate and juicy dark berries. The raspberries are prominent, especially after it warms with vinous sweetness and a tart, seedy character. Smells like an artisan chocolate bar.
Medium bodied with subtle carbonation and a very prominent juicy raspberry flavor that's nicely countered by sweet chocolate, subtle roast and dry oak. Barrel is stronger than in the nose but still tame with only subtle bourbon flavor. Some spicy booze but not hot at all. ABV is well masked. Well balanced and easy to drink with week incorporated barrel, dark fruit and chocolate malt.
