On tap at the Blind Lady.

Pours a deep dark brown color with a pretty nice off white head.

Aromas are hoppy. Some notes of pine, resin, and also some chocolate malts, plus hints of spice.

Taste starts out with some bitter dark chocolate, light spiciness from the rye, subtly sweet and creamy. Finish is fairly hoppy, mostly pine and resin notes, and a touch of citrus.

Mouthfeel is pretty good, but a bit prickly from the carbonation.

Overall, this is a tasty Black Ale. My first from Hangar 24, if I ever see any of their beers again, I'd probably try another.

Draft at KnB Wine Cellar in San Diego, CA. March, 2013.

Pitch black and opaque with a one finger off-white head that quickly settled into a thin, lasting ring.  Splotchy lacing left behind.

Spicy aroma with prominent rye, grassy hops, dark roasted malt and silky sweetness.  The rye and piney hops really stand out along with cocoa, toffee and coffee bean.  Spicy rye and hops compliment each other nicely and are countered by a complex malt backbone.

On the lighter end of medium bodied with spicy rye and a crisp, spicy hop bite that lingers over the dark malt backbone into a bone finish.  Easy to drink with the rye and hops dominating but still has some nice roast and lighter malt sweetness balancing things out.  The ABV is very well masked making this complex beer easier to drink than expected.

Growler

Hangar 24 Brewery
Redlands, CA

Dark brown pour with ruby edges. Thin tan head but lots and lots of lacing down the glass...can't ask for much more.

Roasted malt combined with a strong hop (citrus) presence. A really well balanced aroma--but plenty of citrus hop bite for any hop lovers' delight! (As the beer warms, I'm falling more and more in love with it. The roasted aroma, the strong coffee scent, along with the strong citrus hop bite is really a spectacular combination. Bravo!)

I wish there was more hop presence in the flavor, as this seems particularly stout/porter-like, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, simply unexpected. It's got a lot of roasted malts, coffee, a touch of chocolate, along with some pine. Above average.

Medium to thick mouthfeel.

A good black rye IPA. Though the rye doesn't play much, if any, role in the flavor or aroma of this beer, it's still incredibly aromatic and very flavorful. I'll definitely be reaching for another glass of this on my next visit to Hangar 24.

On-tap at the brewery.

A: A maple brown with a decent whitehead that sticks around for a while and leaves some spotty lacing.

S: Classic dark rye smell with some slight chocolate and a little grain.

T: Much of the nose with some plum sweetness and a slight leather in the finish. Could really play around with the description of this as there are some interesting subtleties packed within.

M: A little on the heavier side of a medium body. This beer pinches the roof of the mouth a little and leaves a dry finish on the tongue.

O: Not a bad india black rye and had more subtleties and creative notes than any other hangar 24 beer I've had, but it was still rather simple and I wouldn't feel compelled to revisit this one.

Growler into tulip

A: Dark ruby, not quite black. Light white head that lingers. Leaves a good lacing in the glass.

S: Smells of citrusy, grapefruity, resiny hops. A little dark malts but not extreme.

T: Citrus upfront, with a slight malt sweetness following, lingering bitterness. The bitter finish hangs a bit. A little spiciness from the rye.

M: Medium mouthfeel.

Overall: Very balanced Black IPA. The rye adds some interesting notes. Its very drinkable, Though Hangar could have been a bit bolder on their approach.

On-tap at Provisions

A: The beer pours a very dark brown color with a finger of khaki head.

S: Really pungent hop aromas of grass and citrus peel, a bit of pine as well. A fair bit of roasted malt and a mild chocolate character. I don't really get much rye; it seems to be lost in all the other things going on.

T: Roasted malt and piney hops give this beer a very pronounced bitterness. Some citrus and citrus peel flavor as well some grassy hops. Mild coffee and dark chocolate notes, but again, not much rye.

M: Medium in body with a medium carbonation.

O: This was sort of middle of the road as far as Hangar 24 beers go. Hopefully they rework this one.

Sampled 6/3/2011 at Bruery Provisions.

Pours slightly hazy dark red/brown, tall dense beige head, good lacing and retention.

Aroma is roast, earthy and piney hops, spices, coffee, and a touch of ass.

Flavor is very roasty, too much so, burnt coffee, dank and piney hops, some strange spiciness that could be pepper, ash.

Body is medium, don't think I like this one.
