Man the hop bill on this was downright laughable. Think of every weird ass hop variety that nobody uses in hoppy beers. Glacier? You mean like that Sub Zero rip off pro wrestler? No, something worse? Yikes.
They actually hyped and had a release party for this beer. No joke. Still have the stickers. There was a pepper like people describe in the aroma. Earthen brown malt.
The taste was marginal. Had a mouth feel of bitterness, but decently did well at not making over 7% "hot". The malt body had more roast going for it than most black ipas. That was what separated the good black ipas from the rest of the crowd. That de husked carafa or something had less bitterness, allowed the hops to shine moreso. Was pretty similar to their schwarzbier, but you know, with an ale yeast.
I think this was the last beer release they ever had, they were gone soon thereafter.

Beautiful chestnut color in the tall Aventinus glass. Great head and long lasting. Creamy and full in the mouth. Big flavor hits you. They like to call this an "India Black Ale," so I was expecting hop wallop, but pleased the find a big hop flavor without the knockout punch. Full floral hoppy aroma, a bit of citrus. Hops listed are Palisade, Newport, Glacier, and Ahtanum. You won't mistake it for any conceivable kind of West Coast IPA but it has a robust charm of its own. Lots of roasted malt and a touch of burnt malt with the faint sourness. Overall, more warm-toned than sharp.
Amazingly flavorful. I have to give this one two thumbs up, for being a nice surprise. I don't know if they get keg distribution outside the area but it would be worth seeking out on tap or in the 16 oz can.

Had this at the release party. A murky dark brown bordering on black. Aroma was weird, unique and good enough.
Why weird? The hop bill, like most Buckbean beers borders on bizarre/unconventional. Ahtanum, Glacier, German Select and something else. . . in an ipa? No cascades, amarillo, simcoe, chinook, columbus, summit etc. . .
More of a peppery hop mouthfeel than anything, seemed to use decent alpha acid hops, as it certainly was bitter. Hid the alcohol well enough. Had a tendency to be a sipper for other reasons though, prolly just my non familiarity with all these hop strains in this style.
Not my favorite black ipa by any means, but a worthy addition to Buckbean's lineup.
