$11 NZD per 425ml handpull/cask pour @ Free House, Nelson, New Zealand.

Silky smooth, light, thin. Borders on watery. Low carbonation.

Taste underwhelms. Thin malt. Faint floral hops. A kiss of diacetyl. Scintilla of buttered toast.

Not a beer I'd get again, and I don't know that it being served from a cask is doing it any favors, though I've no doubt the navel gazing CAMRA wankers obsessed with so-called real ale will gush over it just because it ticks that box.

Certainly drinkable, but shallow, simple, and even a bit insipid.

Lightly fruity with toffee, biscuit and bread notes. Nice but lacking the hops of a true ESB.

Moderately clear copper colour with a smooth, creamy, off-white head. Good head retention.

Smooth and malty. A bit of biscuit and toffee but lacking in the rich, rounded complexities of most ESBs. Not particularly bitter. Creamy.

Medium body with low carbonation. Smooth and silky.

A tasty beer but lacking the depth of the best ESBs.

Batch #118 and it had a best by date of 10/10/10. 5.3% abv. This poured a lightly cloudy reddish orange hue. On the nose you get: spice, malt and a touch of honey. It tasted of light malt, grass, herbs, light bitterness with a light grapefruit bitterness ending. It had great drinkability.

A - A slight hazy dark copper colour with 3 centimetres of off white head that slowly falls away leaving rings of lace down the glass.
S - Grassy and herbal hops with some light toffee maltiness.
T - Much like the smell; a light toffee maltiness balanced by some grasy and herbal hop notes.
M - Light bodied with mimimal carbonation.
D - An ok ESB. I guess drinking it fresher may help but this just lacked character.
