500 mL bottle picked up at the brewery, packaged Sept. 4 2014 and served slightly chilled. I believe that this beer was spawned by Railway City's annual homebrew competition, and I'm fairly sure that it is the strongest (by abv) beer this brewery has ever released. Listed at 25 IBU.

Pours a deep amber-copper colour, hazy in complexion and topped with one finger of bubbly, off-white froth. It dissipates fairly quickly, leaving behind a soapy cap, narrow collar and a few swaths of lacing. Not super-attractive, but the aroma is a little more up my alley - some toffee malt sweetness is present in addition to candi sugar, raisins, ripe banana and an herbal, almost licorice-like note. Appropriate for the style, and the sort of aroma that is quite capable of enticing one into taking a sip...

This is a damn fine dubbel. The flavour profile is big and malty, with both brown and candi sugar sweetness present throughout, as well as fruity notes of raisin and banana featuring strongly mid-sip. The finish is moderately spicy, with notes of clove and bubble gum accompanying a somewhat herbal, anise-like note. An herbal bitterness clings to the palate in the aftertaste, along with a faint yeasty spice. On the fuller side of medium-bodied, with light carbonation levels that lead to a relatively smooth mouthfeel with only a slight prickle on the tongue.

Final Grade: 3.89, a B+. It's not hard to see why Big Hook happened to win this year's competition - it's actually a very good dubbel. While it lacks the impressive appearance and aroma of the bottle-conditioned Belgian examples of this style, the flavour is still right on the money as far as my tastes go, and I'd absolutely love to see this beer brought back in future years (along with past winners of this homebrew-off, such as that beet beer from a few years back). Good stuff; definitely recommended.
