Bomber picked up at the brewery a few weeks ago; "brewed on Nov 27 2015" on the label and listed at 10.3%. Served slightly chilled.
Pours a murky garnet-brown colour, with a nice purplish hue next to the light. One finger of creamy, light beige-coloured head pops up, but over the next 90 seconds it recedes to a dense, long-lasted cap and collar. I am getting lots of dark fruit on the nose - raisin, prune and date, with perhaps a touch of banana. Hints of molasses, rum and licorice; the alcohol becomes more noticeable as it warms.
Lots of dark malt flavour; I can taste treacle, toasted dark bread and biscuit, with more of that raisin and prune/plum from the nose coming through mid-sip. Lots of overripe banana too, and a bit of black cherry followed by a yeasty finish with light spice, herbal notes and some earthiness. Sweet, boozy aftertaste with a vaguely nutty note. Medium-bodied, with gentle carbonation levels that result in a smooth, soft, slightly creamy mouthfeel. A decent sipper, but the alcohol starts to be a bit much.
Final Grade: 3.86, a B+. The Strong Man isn't the best Ontario-brewed Belgian strong dark ale that I've ever had, but it's a passable one that I am enjoying. My main complaints are that it lacks the yeast-derived complexity of most of the imports, is kind of flat, and the alcohol isn't very well-integrated. On the plus side, the flavour profile is not too overbearing (except maybe with the banana) and generally pretty easy to like - my mistake was not to share this 650 mL bottle with someone else. Not sure how much longer supplies will last, but if you're curious then I'd say this is fair game.
