Bomber picked up at the brewery earlier this month; packaged Aug 2017 and served slightly chilled. Part of their ongoing Sideshow Series, this one is described as a 'lemon ginger session ale'.

Pours a hazy pale golden colour, supporting nearly two fingers of foamy, soapy white head off the bat. It soon settles down to a creamier, long-lasted cap and collar about 1 cm high, as the interior surface of the glass becomes caked with a thick coat of lacing. It's an attractive ale, there's no arguing that. Doughy, crackery malts and pale barley malt sweetness come through clearly on the nose, accented by mild notes of ginger snap and lemon. A bit subdued, but at 3% I don't find that to be a major issue (or all that surprising).

The flavour profile is clean and fairly simplistic, with only three major elements - though I'll add that they complement each other and combine quite nicely. The first is its grainy, doughy, lightly bready pale malt backbone, which contributes a low-key, moderating sweetness to the profile. Second is the lemon zestiness, which is probably the most immediately discernible aspect, with its oily citrus flavour. These both overlap with some restrained ginger spiciness that asserts itself just before the finish; it's a touch grassy and herbal, with lemony citrus continuing into the aftertaste. Decidedly light in body, with lively carbonation that prickles, prods and scrubs the palate thoroughly. Crisp in texture, and extremely easy to toss back, as you'd expect for such a light ale.

Final Grade: 3.75, a B+. Railway City's Balancing Act is quite a respectable spiced/fruit beer hybrid, though I'm not sure I'd grab a second bottle without hesitation. While I did enjoy this beer, I also found the ginger presence to be just a little too tame for my own personal preferences - of course, your mileage may vary, depending on your affinity for that spice. Given that this summer's searing heat seems to be persisting well into late September, I'd say that now is probably a good time to pull the trigger on this one, assuming you're in the St. Thomas area: it's a nice little thirst quencher that should help buffer against the last of this year's hot weather.
