473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Jul 31 2023 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a deep reddish colour, its translucent body topped with an inch of foamy, pale pink-tinged head that lasts for two or three minutes. A modest smattering of lace clings to the glass above a creamy, sudsy collar and film; looks alright to me. The aroma is relatively faint, comprised of wheaty cereal grains and a vaguely sweet, fruity note that doesn't immediately remind me of cherries.
The flavours you'd expect are (mostly) there, but they're quite weak so the gimmick never really comes together. I'm tasting subtle cherry fruitiness, with notes of wheaty cereal, grain husk and grainy malts; the vanilla is detectable on the back end, mingling with hints of tart cherry and cherry juice that don't last long into the aftertaste. Light-medium in body, with moderate carbonation that adds a good, proper bite to this cream ale's smooth mouthfeel. Easy to toss back - it's a half-decent summer patio beer, but otherwise forgettable.
Final Grade: 3.47, a B-. Railway City's Cherry CreamsicAle is definitely not as good as the Orange version, but I don't think it's a complete failure, either. It's still a reasonably palatable cream ale - I just don't think they pulled off the cherry creamsicle angle very well. Not something I'd enthusiastically recommend, but I wouldn't discourage others from trying it, either.
