First Class IPA presents with strong aromas reminiscent of a Florida orange grove. Pours a brilliant deep gold, with plenty of sweet citrus flavour with notes of stone fruit. The hops are supported by a balanced malt bill that delivers a toasted mild sweetness. First Class IPA finishes with a smooth refined pine bitterness. Step into the luxurious world of First Class, brewed to transport your taste buds on an unforgettable adventure. 45 IBU

473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Oct 12 2023 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a lightly fogged golden-orange hue, topped with almost two inches of fluffy, foamy, resilient white head that seeps away over the next six or seven minutes. A delicate pattern of spidery lace graces the glass afterwards, with a tight collar of creamy suds lasting on. It smells of tangerine and grapefruit pithiness, with hints of earthy, resiny hops, stone fruit and alcohol.
A decently rendered IPA that doesn't do anything out of the ordinary. I'm tasting bready, grainy pale malts and a light honeyed sweetness, overlapping with more prominent notes of orange and grapefruit. Citrus, stone fruit and floral, piney bitterness develop towards the tail end, concluding with more of the same into a bitter, persistent aftertaste. Medium in body, with lively carbonation that adds some bite to this brew's smooth, somewhat slick mouthfeel. Fair drinkability for 6.5%, but a single can was more than enough for me tonight.
Final Grade: 3.57, a B. Railway City seems to be in the process of shuffling their line-up, with First Class IPA recently added as one of three new year-round products - the others being their Boxcar Juicy IPA and Whistle Stop pale ale. First Class is an acceptable, relatively old-school IPA, but if they're planning to continue brewing Dead Elephant then I think this is a borderline redundant inclusion in their portfolio. Nothing really wrong with it, but there are just so many Ontario IPAs to choose from, and this doesn't do much of anything to differentiate itself from the crowd. Still worth a fair shake: try it ASAP, while it's easy to find fresh.
