★★★½

Microbrasserie Le Corsaire "Davy Jones Stout"
on tap @ Le Projet, Québec, QC on 3 Octobre 2014
$4.35 Canadian / verre
Notes: Oatmeal stout. Black with a beautiful creamy beige head, excellent head retention and lacing. Clean. The aroma suggests softly roasted malts and coffee, and that carries over into the flavor, although clearly the flavor is fuller. It's roasty but without any dark malt acidity or harshness, and it's lightly sweet but also lightly bitter - bittersweet, but we're talking somewhere around 35 IBUs - with more grainy malt sweetness than caramel, although there is some, and some soft cocoa and subtle coffee notes that round it out. It's really nicely balanced, and creamy smooth with a medium body. Really easy to drink - I think the beauty of it is in what it's not, as in "sometimes less is more".

Corsaire is across the Saint Lawrence river from Quebec City. This was founded by the master brewer from l'Inox.
Near black color with a white-beige head. No light passes. The head is thick and foamy. Little lace.
Cocoa and white bread toast are the predominant aromas. Not as harsh as many stouts.
The flavor matches the smell. No bitter coffee notes. There's less cocoa to the taste. Instead there is a stronger burnt toast element. Still, this is an easy stout to drink.
