It’d been awhile since I had something from Bootlegger’s. In fact, I had only reviewed Rustic Rye IPA (3.66) on July 10, 2014 (recorded on Beer Advocate on July 18, 2014) and Winter Ale Chocolate Mint Porter (3.85) on Dec. 11, 2012. Had seen a lot of their cans in stores, mainly Windmill Farms. They always have some of the best can designs and the prices seem fair. I guess some of the old canned on dates were keeping me away. Anyway, picked up this on a recent trip to Windmill Farms with a canned on date of March 2, 2018. Description from their Instragram account was, “Fullerton Haze IPA Hop Blend No. 3 has made its way to the tasting room! Utilizing Pure Idaho Malt, Wheat Malt and Oat Malt, this is one hop blend you don’t want to miss out on!” Sounded good to me.
Poured a hazy pale color with 2-to-3 fingers of off-white rocky head. A few bubble streams coming up from the bottom of the glass. Average watery lacing. Good retention. (Sight - 3.50)
Smelled peach, mango, bitter orange peel, stone fruit, pine, herbal, Cascade, orange blossom and caramel. More potent from the can with tropical flavors dominating in mango, guava, pineapple and peach. (Smell - 3.75)
Tasted at least as good as the smell. More juice than I thought, but some spice as well. Thinking that’s the El Dorado leading the way. Also peach, mango, pineapple basically - Simply Tropical juice - grapefruit, pear, orange juice, pine, lime, bitter orange rind and passion fruit. (Taste - 4.00)
Medium body. Oily texture. Average carbonation. Long juicy finish. (Feel - 4.25)
Really enjoyed this one. Usually not a fan of the hazy IPAs that are more juice than hops, but this one worked for me for some reason. (Overall - 4.00)
