I picked up a bomber of this Double India Pale Lager (DIPL) from Hi Times in Newport Beach, CA on 03/10/2017. No bottled date. 9.5% APV. Black Market Brewing hails from Temecula, CA.
Charlatan DIPL pours a bright amber with excellent carbonation. 3 fingers of fine white foam. Good retention. Good lacing. The smell is citrus, pine, dankness and freshly baked bread. The taste starts with a great lager taste, followed immediately by pronounced citrus and pine hops. The strong hop taste fades quickly into the mild malt backbone, leaving a mild, yet delicious, citrus and pine hops-aftertaste. The 9.5% ABV gives a nice boozy taste. But the best part is the mouthfeel -- even the fine foam is euphoric.
Charlatan DIPL puts industrialized lagers to shame. I think this DIPL could even be more bitter, but that's me. I'll definitely add this DIPL to my weekly rotation of daily DIPAs.
