From growler purchased (poured from tap and sealed) two days before drinking. Purchased at Cactus Food Mart, Scottsdale, AZ.
Pours brown with a nice ruby tint. As expected for style, no real head to speak of and no lacing (but some wine-like legs).
The smell is of raisin bread, plums, toffee, molasses, hint of anise, chocolate. Strong vinuous notes with bourbon/vanilla and earthy tones. Very robust. Incredible, assertive notes. Rich and complex.
The taste is of raisins, plums, dark cherries, oak/bourbon/vanilla, blueberries, red wine with a vague hint of anise and cocoa. Sweetness balanced by a touch of sour and hint of earthy bitterness. Alcohol is warming and black pepper-like spicy. Long, strong finish.
Low carbonation, but it is present. It hits full-bodied in a thick, somewhat syrupy way. Flavors hang on the palate in a good way. Too easy to drink for the abv content (not a complaint at all).
This is an awesome brew! Represents the Barleywine style very well. Complex maltiness without being too sticky. Very rich. Wonderful!
