Served in a tumbler at the brewery. From notes. Reviewed 23 November 2011.

A: No head. Dark and cloudy -- the colour is light...a darker shade of honey. Muddy amber?

S: Sharp, tangy citrus. Hint of hops? Not very strong.

T: Interesting! Summarised as a 'sour IPA' this is the standard Good People IPA with Brettanomyces added. The base beer is still clearly discernible -- a round, fruity flavour with a moderate tartness introduced by the funky yeast before the strong hops take over and lead to a bitter finish.

M: Substantial and hoppy (chewy) with supportive malts and nice carbonation.

O: A weird beer, but good. A recommended twist one of my favourite local beers. I would drink (or buy) again, but sparingly.

8.2% ABV
68.3 IBU
9.9 SRM [Ed: It actually looked darker than this.]

This is another in the ultra-limited series from Good People called Urban Carboys, which involves some local homebrewers. I know Malone is very happy with this and we can expect to see it again at some point, in larger quantities.

The recipe for this is identical to his standard (Willamette-heavy) IPA, but this one was fermented 100% with Brett Brux. Not sure my style choice in adding this beer is perfect, but considering the original Brett beer was Orval, it seems that aspect of it pushes it into Belgian territory.

Appearance is perfect. Thick, rocky head that lasts and lasts. Dark golden hue with some cloudiness I find downright sexy in IPAs, as the best ones are all unfiltered.

Smell is mostly floral and citrusy hops. I was amazed I just about could not detect Brett funk on the nose, just dry hops. Awesome.

Taste is incredible. Willamette is a great match with Brett B funk. Tons of both floral and citrus hops bouncing around, with a very restrained Brett earthiness/barnyard character in the background. I've heard that sometimes Brett character is less pronounced in 100% Brett fermented beers than when a beer is primaried with Sacc and secondaried with Brett. Anyway, the Brett here is more polite than in Orval. It all melds very well and is pleasure to drink.

Mouthfeel is pretty much perfect. Smooth and pleasing on the tongue, plenty of carbonation.
