Picked up at the brewery during a February ski trip in northern Vermont. Perfect beer for the season/weather and even better coming from a brewery of this magnitude. It’s sweet yet has a subtle hop backbone and finish to remind you that it’s a Doppelbock. The malt is properly roasted and has that toasty, earthy flavor you want in this style. Delicious.

Poured from a 16 oz can into a tulip glass.

Pours a lightly hazy brownish ruby color with a finger of off-white head. The head leaves a few random splotches of lacing before it settles into a thin halo.

The aroma brings notes of brown sugar, caramel, and plum, with hints of black cherries and almonds. Pleasant but straightforward for the style.

The flavor is far more nutty, bringing notes of roasted almonds and toffee before a wave of caramel and brown sugar. This is followed with notes of cherries and plums. The finish brings subtle notes of fresh garlic and onion bagels. Sweet, but the hop presence doesn't quite mesh with the other flavors.

The feel is full-bodied with moderate carbonation. Very sticky and syrupy with plenty of alcohol warmth. Has a relatively dry finish.

Overall, a solid and interesting Doppel but definitely not a beer I'd seek out. I like that the hop character is present, but I don't like the hop character itself, at least not for this beer.

16oz. can served in a tulip. Pours a lovely translucent mahogany with a loose, quarter inch, head that quickly dissipates towards the edges. Nose is fairly subdued - candied plums and perhaps a hint of cherry. Taste consistent with nose, albeit much duller. Missing the sugary sweetness I've come to associate with the style. Mouthfeel is light in body with a carbonation shy of lively and a semi-dry finish. Overall, a decent beer but there are better examples of the style out there.

L- The beer pours a beautiful plum with just a touch of haze. The head is one finger of off white foam. The head recedes to a thin ring leaving no lacing behind.
S-The nose is full of dark fruits. Plum dominates. There is a hint of alcohol at the end.
T-The dark fruit in the nose is absent here in the taste. Instead there are aspects of mildly sweet toffee and toast. Alcohol presence is perceived through gentle warming in the belly. The beer leans slightly sweet, but never becomes overwhelming.
F-Mouthfeel overall is medium. Carbonation is light, but persistent. Surprisingly the beer finishes a bit dry.
O- A very good domestic version of a German doppelbock. It's a really good representation of the style. Recommended.
